Mekong region ministers sign pact to maintain river levels (23-06-2006) HCM CITY — Ministers representing the four member countries of the Mekong River Commission (MRC) signed an important agreement on the procedures concerning the maintenance of flows on the Mekong mainstream yesterday. The ministers, who are also members of the MRC Council from Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Viet Nam, endorsed the procedures at a signing ceremony in HCM City. The flow procedures are required under the provisions of the 1995 Mekong Agreement on the Cooperation for the Sustainable Development of the Mekong River Basin, which formed the MRC. The agreement requires the member states to co-operate in the maintenance of acceptable minimum monthly flows in the dry season; acceptable natural reverse flow of the Tonle Sap during the wet season; and prevention of peak flows greater than those which occur naturally. According to a report on fuel price management, sent by the Government to the National Assembly, local fuel prices have risen by 17.2%-27.1% since early this year, lower than the global rates of 30.6%-46.2%. After nine adjustments, the fuel price was revised upward four times by a total of VND4,416 per liter and downward once by VND515 per liter, and was kept stable in four adjustments.
