It has been several months in the making – and an estimated 900 emails back and forth between the office and Clarence House – and it took even longer to get the Prince of Wales in the first place. "Because of the nature of editing this magazine," Hedges says, "you run into the royal family quite regularly so I took it upon myself to ask him. That was at Buckingham Palace," he mentions casually. "I'd also spoken to the Duchess of Cornwall at Highgrove," he adds, smiling, "so I was trying a … [Read more...] about Country Life’s editor: ‘We’ll be the last magazine on the last news-stand’

Dec 8, 2019, 11:56 IST Disha Patani is raising the mercury this season with her pictures from the December issue of "Harper's Bazaar" magazine. The actress turned cover girl for the magazine and we're not surprised given how her fashion game is always on point and she's one of those few actresses who can do justice to any look. It's no secret that Disha's growth as an actor has been tremendous and that she's managed to carve a niche for herself in the industry. Many countries are in the throes of a debate about the amount of surveillance a government should be allowed to carry out on its own people. But in other countries, where there are few, if any, checks on the state's powers, a potential dictatorship of data is already on the horizon. The grey, drab former headquarters of the Stasi - East Germany's Security Service - is famous for its miles of paper files. Those files recorded the detailed information kept on the citizens of the former Communist state, drawn from a wealth of human informers and bugging devices. Parts of the former office complex are now a museum open to the public, but in one corridor normally closed to the public there is a jumble of dated-looking equipment - a primitive computer looking more like a spin-dryer for clothes and old magnetic discs the size of a football, which held a fraction of what you can now fit on a USB stick. This is all that remains of the Stasi's dreams of what computers could do for them. "I think … [Read more...] about Will Big Data lead to Big Brother?
A Japanese magazine that advised women to compliment men on their intelligence by saying “You sound like Socrates” has been ridiculed in the country ranked one of the world’s worst for gender parity.“JJ”, a major fashion magazine targeted at young women, encouraged readers to compare men to the classical Greek philosopher when they say something complicated.A picture of the page sparked mirth when it was shared on Twitter -- with some users noting that Socrates did not live happily ever after, as he was sentenced to death by drinking poison.Users of both genders poured scorn on the technique to attract men, with one saying: “If a woman told me I sound like Socrates, I would wonder if she’s sane.”The tips were based on a comic book by a female manga artist, the magazine said, playing on a popular trope where women compliment men and feign stupidity. In 2018, Japan ranked 110th out of 149 countries in the … [Read more...] about You sound like Socrates: Japanese magazine ridiculed for absurd dating advice for women
