Disney on Wednesday announced it’s reteaming with director Jon Favreau on a “reimagining” of The Lion King, which will include songs from the original film. Though the news is unexpected, it shouldn’t come as a complete surprise: The studio is in the middle of an effort to remake its animated classics — including Cinderella, Pete’s Dragon, and the upcoming Beauty and the Beast — and The Lion King remains one of the most-loved films of Disney’s 1990s golden age. Favreau’s remake of The Jungle Book used CGI motion-capped animals alongside real human boy Neeli Seth, and it seems likely that The Lion King, which has no human characters, will use similar methods for its animal leads. Back in 2007, Tim Burton made a splashy homecoming. The director had spent the early part of his career working on short films for Disney and animating on now-forgotten projects like The Fox and the Hound; now he was returning to the studio to develop a pair of ambitious remakes, one of his short film Frankenweenie and the other a live-action remake of the animated Alice in Wonderland. The reason that Disney had been so keen to lure the director back had mostly to do with product. In the years since Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas was released in 1993, the demand for its merchandise had only increased; a movie that was initially seen as a commercial disappointment was generating millions of dollars a year. If the same logic held, Burton would be able to turn these older properties into something fresh, fun, and highly sellable. It worked. Alice in Wonderland, eventually released in spring 2010, wound up making more than $1 billion worldwide. Its success proved to Disney … [Read more...] about Welcome to the Remake Kingdom
Kendrick Lamar. Photo: Christopher Polk/Getty Images for Coachella Assuming things go the way most Oscar observers are expecting, “Shallow,” the Lady Gaga–Bradley Cooper off-the-deep-end duet from A Star Is Born, will win this year’s Academy Award for Best Original song. If and when that happens, it will mark only the fourth time in this young century that a bona fide hit song has received that gold statuette. Actually, if the nominee widely seen as the stiffest competition “Shallow” faces, “All the Stars,” co-recorded and co-written by Kendrick Lamar for the Black Panther soundtrack, wins instead, it would achieve the same distinction. “All the Stars” peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Black Panther soundtrack spent three nonconsecutive weeks as the No. 1 album in America, while “Shallow” peaked at No. 5, and A Star Is Born held onto the No. 1 album slot for three straight weeks last fall. … [Read more...] about An Oscar Win for ‘Shallow’ or ‘All the Stars’ Would Be Significant.
