The City regulator has been censured for adopting a high-risk and inadequately controlled strategy when a press briefing about its review of the life insurance industry led to £3bn being wiped off the value of insurance company shares. Top officials at the Financial Conduct Authority, including its chief executive, Martin Wheatley, are to lose their bonuses following the publication of a damning report into the incident, when the Daily Telegraph was briefed about the watchdog’s plan to conduct a sweeping review of insurance policies. A report by Simon Davis, a lawyer at Clifford Chance, criticised the FCA for its advance briefing to the newspaper and the way it handled the fallout. The FCA did not issue a clarifying statement until 2.27pm on Friday 28 March – 14 hours after the information was published, at 10pm the previous night. That statement said that 30m policies were not going to be subject to the review, as had been reported. How to prevent heart disease and lead a healthy life
In fact, YouGov Galaxy’s Heart Health Study — commissioned by News Corp Australia in partnership with the Heart Foundation — reveals that a staggering 51 per cent of Aussies wouldn’t be overly concerned if diagnosed with the condition — and one million would rather risk a heart attack than take medication. These are hard truths to swallow, but not surprising, according to cardiologist Professor Garry Jennings. You can take control of your heart health. Picture: GettySource:Getty Images “I do sense a kind of complacency in our community when it comes to heart disease,” he says. “People don’t think it can affect them or understand how common it is. A 45-year-old woman has a one-in-three chance of developing a heart problem sometime in her life while a man of the same age has a one-in-two chance. “It’s currently Australia’s biggest killer and unless something changes, it will stay that way for some time.” … [Read more...] about How to prevent heart disease and lead a healthy life
Govt Living in Denial: Medical Fraternity Fumes at Javadekar’s Remarks on Air Pollution & Life Expectancy
New Delhi: A year ago, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) had released a study that said air pollution caused one in eight deaths in India in 2017, besides lowering the average life expectancy by 1.7 years. The first comprehensive estimate of deaths, disease burden and life expectancy reduction associated with air pollution across states was collated under the India State Level Disease Burden Initiative, a collaboration of the ICMR, Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) along with the Union health ministry. The findings have also been published in The Lancet Planetary Health. The above-mentioned bodies are all Indian institutes, working closely with the Government of India. ICMR is a government-sponsored body, the country's premier most research institute. It is the apex body in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research. ICMR's report said 1.24 million deaths in India in 2017 were … [Read more...] about Govt Living in Denial: Medical Fraternity Fumes at Javadekar’s Remarks on Air Pollution & Life Expectancy

2.5million children in the US and 500,000 in the UK do not receive the life-saving measles jab each year, data reveals amid surge in antivaxx scare stories (so how many miss out in YOUR country?)
Millions of children around the world have not been vaccinated against measles amid a rise in online 'antivaxx' scare stories. A surge in measles outbreaks around the world is being fuelled by plummeting vaccination rates, the charity Unicef has warned. Around 527,000 children in the UK did not receive the potentially life-saving jab between 2010 and 2017, with 'fake news' spread on social media partly to blame. The UK comes third in a global ranking showing the number of unvaccinated children in high-income countries. The US topped the charts, with 2,593,000 youngsters not receiving their first measles dose over the eight-year-period. Earth’s oceans could lose one-sixth of marine life by 2100 due to climate change
Washington — The world's oceans will likely lose about one-sixth of its fish and other marine life by the end of the century if climate change continues on its current path, a new study says. The study comes on the heels of a report published by Australian climate experts that warned human civilization faces "an existential risk" from climate change by 2050. Every degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit) that the world's oceans warm, the total mass of sea animals is projected to drop by 5%, according to a comprehensive computer-based study by an international team of marine biologists. And that does not take into account the effects of fishing. If the world's greenhouse gas emissions stay at the present rate, that means a 17% loss of biomass — the total weight of all marine animal life — by the year 2100. But if the world reduces carbon pollution, losses can be limited to only about 5%, the study said. Last week, a new report by Australian climate experts warned … [Read more...] about Earth’s oceans could lose one-sixth of marine life by 2100 due to climate change
