Earlier this May, Quang Yen was added to the national plan for coastal economic zones. Located southwest of Quang Ninh and on the border to Hai Phong, the economic zone covers a total area of 13,303 hectares comprised of two functional sub-zones: a nearly 6,900-hectare subzone for seaport services and industrial zone named Dam Nha Mac, and over 6,400 hectares for an urban area and high-tech sub-zone. China’s change of view not expected soon in East Sea dispute

August 17, 2016 by vietnamnews.vn

Viet Nam News Nha Trang, KHÁNH HÒA – The arbitral ruling last month laid out a historic legal basis for a step closer to resolving territorial disputes in the East Sea (South China Sea), yet it will take patience to expect any breakthroughs on the way, especially a change of view from China, experts have said. The Hague’s Arbitral Tribunal on July 12 rendered its long-awaited ruling in favour of the Philippines against China, slamming its so-called nine-dash-line encircling more than 90 per cent of the East Sea. The award also categorised which features in the Trường Sa (Spratly) archipelago were islands or just mere rocks, of which the latter could not generate a maritime zone according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). “The ruling rejected the ’historic rights’ of China and significantly narrowed the disputed area among the claimant states,” Phan Duy Hảo, senior research fellow at the National University of Singapore’s Centre for International Law … [Read more...] about China’s change of view not expected soon in East Sea dispute

China no longer largest rice buyer of Vietnam By Trung Chanh Local farmers are harvesting rice in the Mekong Delta. China is no longer the largest buyer of Vietnamese rice – PHOTO: TRUNG CHANH CAN THO – China imported more than 9,500 tons of Vietnamese rice during the year up to February valued at some US$4.5 million, sharply declining by over 95% in both volume and value, prompting it to drop from first to seventh place among Vietnam’s largest rice importers, according to data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs. In previous years, the volume of rice shipped to the neighboring country had accounted for at least 35% of Vietnam’s rice export turnover. Some local rice traders and exporters told the Saigon Times that the sharp decline of rice exports to China was mainly ascribed to its tightening control over unofficial rice imports from across the border, alongside the tax hike of up to 50%. Nguyen Van Don, director of Viet Hung Co., Ltd, stated that … [Read more...] about China no longer largest rice buyer of Vietnam

WTO steals show at ASEAN meet

October 1, 2005 by vietnamnews.vn

WTO steals show at ASEAN meet (01-10-2005) VIENTIANE — Some 16 regional countries wrapped-up a three day conference yesterday, pledging to promote global trade when the WTO meets in Hong Kong later this year, to reduce poverty and combat record oil prices. The talks were designed by the 10-nation Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) to further its own free trade agenda. Delegate spokesman for India SN Melon said the WTO talks were at an advanced stage, with negotiators plotting a roadmap which could deliver success at the summit. "The general view is for some kind of breakthrough, hopefully by next month or mid-November," he told journalists. ASEAN also pledged its support for the … [Read more...] about WTO steals show at ASEAN meet
