He also said in the same letter that “journalists should act like brave soldiers in the revolution to gain back unity and independence for the country.” One cannot imagine loftier ideals for this profession. Today, the lofty ideals may remain, but there are times I feel these are gathering dust in the shelves of our memory as the profession goes through one existential crisis after another. More than seven decades after President Hồ Chí Minh wrote the famous letter, it is fair to say journalism has gone through many changes, all over the world. Fuel prices on the local market dropped today - PHOTO: VNA HCMC - Retail fuel prices on the local market are down today, January 1, by VND515 to VND1,092 per liter or kilogram, the local media reported, citing a statement jointly issued by the ministries of Industry and Trade and Finance. The price of bio-fuel E5 RON92 petrol decreased by VND515 per liter to VND16,272, while higher-grade RON95-III gasoline dropped VND538 per liter at VND17,603. Diesel oil saw the highest reduction in price, dropping VND1,902 per liter, with the current ceiling price of VND14,909, while kerosene is priced at VND14,185 per liter, falling VND818. Also, heavy fuel oil 3.5S fell by VND733 per kilogram to VND13,275. The move came after many drivers expressed their opposition to the high fees at BOT toll stations. According to the latest news, drivers were putting small notes into bottles when they paid toll fees at the Cai Lậy BOT toll station in Mekong Delta’s Tiền Giang Province on Sunday afternoon, causing traffic to come to a standstill and resulting in difficulties for fee collectors. The drivers’ action was their way of voicing their disagreement with the high fee at the toll station that officially began operation one week ago. The fee is VNĐ35,000-180,000 ($1.5-8) each time for a 12-km road.
