The scene of the fire in Sài Gòn - Lạng Sơn Trade Centre on Monday.— Photo tuoitre.vn Viet Nam News LẠNG SƠN — A raging fire burnt down kiosks at the Sài Gòn-Lạng Sơn Trade Centre in Lạng Sơn Province’s Văn Lãng District on Monday morning. The blaze is believed to have destroyed goods worth billions of đồng in the northern mountainous province. Foretunately, no casualties were reported so far. According to a witness, the blaze started around 7.20am, and thick smoke rose dozens of metres high, the Voice of Việt Nam (VoV) online newspaper reported. Đường Thị Xuyến, vice chairwoman of Văn Lãng District, said nearly 300 people, including fire-fighters, soldiers and locals, worked together to put out the blaze. Court sentences smuggling gang (23-05-2005) LANG SON — The People’s Court of the northern province of Lang Son, which completed the one-month trial in the country’s largest cross-border smuggling case, has sentenced two of the accused to 17 years in prison, three to 12 to 14 years, and the rest of 37 people found guilty to 2 to 12 years. The court cancelled the trial of Dinh Van Ha, from the 38 people charged originally in the smuggling case, pending further investigation. Dang Xuan Thanh and Nguyen Van Truong, who received 17-year sentences, have also been imposed a fine of VND290 million. Officials and staff of anti-smuggling teams, the police and the customs, accused in the case, received sentences ranging from 18 months of suspension to four years of probation. Around 38 people were charged by the police for smuggling in Doi Cave in Tan My Village of Van Lang Commune in 2002. Currency cheats get jail sentence (28-06-2005) DAK NONG — A people’s court in Tay Nguyen’s (the Central Highlands) Dak Nong Province has sentenced ten people to a total of 59 years in prison for possesing and circulating counterfeit banknotes. At the two-day trial held last week, the judge sentenced Hoang Van Hung, the ring leader, to 18 years in jail. Between April and August 2004, Hung, 22, from southern Binh Phuoc Province, went to the northern Lang Son Province, and China to buy counterfeit VND100,000 and VND20,000 banknotes with a total face value of VND155.6 million (US$10,000). Hung then co-operated with nine residents in Dak Mil District and Cu Jut District in Dak Nong Province to circulate the fake money. At their arrests, police found only four fake VND100,000 banknotes in their possession. At a conference today, February 15, on the prevention and control of epidemics involving terrestrial animals in the northern region, Tien said that bird flu has been reported in 31 countries and territories, while African hog cholera has been found in 21 countries. The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) said that between 2017 and February 14 this year, the disease struck 20 countries and territories, and an estimated 1.1 million infected pigs were culled. Pigs in Vietnam are at risk of being infected by those from neighboring China. From August last year to February 14, China saw 25 of its provinces suffering from 105 pig cholera outbreaks, with over 950,000 pigs culled. Concerns over the risk of infection in Vietnam come from poultry and cattle smuggling activities and the illegal trade of processed and live pigs mainly by the northern provinces through the border crossings of the neighboring country.
