10 years on, Việt Nam’s vision of strong sea-based economy faces rows of roadblocks

October 15, 2018 by vietnamnews.vn

Fish is carried from boats at Cà Ná Fishing Port in Thuận Nam District, south central province of Ninh Thuận. — VNA/VNS Photo Công Thử Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam is reaping the benefits of a national strategy laid out 10 years ago to garner riches from the country’s long coastline, over 3,000 islands and abundant water areas three times the size of its land mass. In 2007, the 10th Party Central Committee ratified the Việt Nam Maritime Strategy towards 2020. The strategy, and the myriad guidelines, policies and generous investment that have followed it have turbo-charged Việt Nam ’s coastal economy, which includes tourism, fisheries, oil and gas, and other sectors reliant on the sea. However, a wide range of challenges stands in the way of the country reaching its primary targets: ensuring the sea-based economy accounts for 53-55 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) and per capita income in coastal areas doubles the average of the whole country … [Read more...] about 10 years on, Việt Nam’s vision of strong sea-based economy faces rows of roadblocks

iPhone demand weakness just ‘noise,’ outlook remains strong, analyst says

March 12, 2021 by appleinsider.com

Investment bank Morgan Stanley calls recent reports of weaker iPhone demand "supply chain noise," and sees the AAPL pullback as a buying opportunity for investors. In a note to investors seen by AppleInsider , analyst Katy Huberty says she agrees with reports of iPhone 12 mini weakness, but adds that the overall demand environment remains positive for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro lineup. For one, she cites reports that Apple is cutting iPhone production to 75 million units in the first half of 2021. Although Huberty admits this has contributed to recent AAPL underperformance, she says the news is "noise rather than anything that impacts the fundamental outlook." A recent Morgan Stanley check indicated that there's between three million and five million units of total iPhone build upside risk for the first half of 2021. That's because the bank's research indicates that build orders for specific iPhone 12 and iPhone 11 models are being revised up, not … [Read more...] about iPhone demand weakness just ‘noise,’ outlook remains strong, analyst says

Agro-exports amid trade war

Agro-exports amid trade war By Nguyen Dinh Bich Pomelos at a farm in Dong Nai Province. Agro-products still account for a large share of Vietnam’s export profle, at 16.6% - PHOTO: THANH HOA Vietnam’s agro-product exports have slowed down after five months of the Sino-U.S. trade war. What are the true reasons? Although the U.S. has lost the position as the top market for Vietnam’s agro-product exports held in 14 years (2001-2014), this market has remained firmly in the second position since 2015, because it is still the largest market for Vietnam’s leading agro exports, such as timber and woodwork, which account for 36-44% of the total export revenue of these commodities; cashew nuts (32-37%) and seafood (about 20%). Meanwhile, China has maintained the top position after overtaking the U.S. for the first time in 2011, and has even become the largest importer of quite a few major agro-products of Vietnam over the past many years. The country accounts for some 90% of … [Read more...] about Agro-exports amid trade war

Make-or-break moment for transit bus service The Saigon Times Daily The transit bus service is vital for any major city as it provides convenience for tourists and residents alike, ensures orderly traffic circulation, and ease pressure on urban infrastructure. It’s no wonder that HCMC has over the years mobilized huge resources to develop this form of public transport. However, despite great efforts, the commuter bus service sector has not achieved its aims, becoming increasingly unpopular among city dwellers and visitors. It is noteworthy that public buses have become more oblivious over the years. In the first half of 2018, for example, buses in the city transported 96 million passengers, making up less than one-third of the year’s target and falling 16% year-on-year, according to Lao Dong newspaper. In the past decade, the number of bus commuters has fallen sharply. It peaked in 2012 when the total number of bus passengers in HCMC reached 413 million, but ever … [Read more...] about Make-or-break moment for transit bus service

Investors seen in Tet holiday mode in next two weeks

January 20, 2019 by english.thesaigontimes.vn

Investors seen in Tet holiday mode in next two weeks By Phuong Thao HCMC – Securities experts have predicted dismal trading will continue in the next two weeks, with the stock indexes treading water amid domestic investor caution. Tran Duc Anh, director of macroeconomy and market strategy at KB Vietnam Securities Company, said the market went through a boring week last week with revenue slumping and the VN-Index of the Hochiminh Stock making little change. However, it is normal for the market to become lackluster before the traditional New Year holiday, or Tet. From a technical perspective, this is a seasonal phenomenon as investors need some time to assess stock performances last year and set up investment plans for the new year. Besides, investors have stayed on the sidelines to watch developments on the global market. In general, the market has yet to see signs of an accumulation phase in the near future. For now, investors are just too cautious to join the market, the … [Read more...] about Investors seen in Tet holiday mode in next two weeks
