Former Secretary of State John Kerry drew some comparisons between his ill-fated run for president in 2004 and former Vice President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign. Republicans are using dirty tricks on Biden, Kerry told reporters Sunday at a rally in New Hampshire. He suggested President Donald Trump’s criticisms of Biden’s son’s business dealings in Ukraine are similar to those leveled against his Vietnam War record in the 1960s.“This is not a new strategy. They did it with me, about my military record,” he said at the rally. “It’s called create doubt … And that is precisely what they’re trying to do with Joe Biden,” Kerry added. “That’s absolutely what they’re doing with Ukraine.” Kerry, who lost his only presidential bid in 2004, announced his support for Biden’s candidacy Dec. 5, saying in a press statement at the time that Biden is “uniquely” suited to defeat Trump, whom … [Read more...] about John Kerry Suggests Republicans Are Doing To Biden What They Did To Him In 2004

Move Over, Julia! Sesame Street’s “First Autistic Muppet” Was Bert
Yesterday’s ballyhoo about Sesame Street’s “first autistic Muppet,” Julia, joining the cast is underwhelming, since the personality and temperament of one of the show’s inaugural characters suggests that he, too, is very much on the spectrum: Bert (of “and Ernie” fame). Think about it:Bert’s speech is monotonous and flat. His obsessions with pigeons and paper clips go well beyond normal hobbies. Many of his routines with Ernie focus on his inability to appreciate sarcasm, metaphors, and figures of speech: Bert: Tell me, how do I look? Ernie: With your eyes, Bert. (giggle) Bert: Oh, Ernie, come on…. Like many autistic children, his food preferences draw on texture and color as much as taste – in his case oatmeal, unflavored fizzy water, and other bland foods. Over five decades, the show never pathologized Bert’s social differences. He was accepted for his quirks, and his fellow human and Muppet performers learned to … [Read more...] about Move Over, Julia! Sesame Street’s “First Autistic Muppet” Was Bert
Leadership 101: The “sharpening iron” of the family
By W. Thomas Smith Jr. Any organization – whether military, business or otherwise – must function as a team to be successful. To be successful while simultaneously surviving all trials and tribulations hurled against it, the organization must function as a family; not a dysfunctional family mind you, but a family whose members are selfless, devoted, loving, unwaveringly-loyal yet unafraid to discipline one another, and committed to the family as a whole. The truly gifted leader recognizes this, and demands it of his subordinate leaders. “We will relate to one another as family” This month, the senior leadership of the S.C. State Guard held a strategic planning conference in Camden, S.C. in which overall “mission” was discussed, solutions to challenges were proposed, commanders briefed – and were briefed by – attendees, and directives were issued. For the record, the State Guard is the state defense force component of the broader S.C. … [Read more...] about Leadership 101: The “sharpening iron” of the family
