(CNN)Former Vice President Joe Biden is thinking about running for president, yet few seem to think he's the frontrunner for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. The reasons to be suspect are plenty including his record (fairly mainstream in a party moving to the left), his age (he's 76) and the fact that he's a white male in a diversifying party that nominated women in record numbers in 2018. But maybe -- just maybe -- we're underestimating Biden's strength. Let's go through some key points working in Biden's favor. 1. He leads in all the polls Our CNN national poll last week had Biden ahead at 30%. He hasn't trailed in a single national poll conducted in the last 11 months. Our Iowa caucus poll had him leading the pack with 32%. Biden's advantage is far from dominating, but it's nothing to sneeze at, even at this early stage. Story highlights Joe Biden could decide whether to run for President in coming days Biden may have trouble shoring up union support because of trade policies Washington (CNN)Joe Biden's relationship with America's working men and women is at the core of his political soul. But as he reaches the end of a long process of contemplating a run for President -- a decision could be imminent -- the Vice President faces an uncomfortable question: Will the union movement be there for him at his moment of greatest political need? Labor has long been the backbone of Biden's career and his associates have signaled that the issues the movement cares about would be central to a presidential campaign. Former Sen. Ted Kaufman, a top Biden aide, said in a recent email to former staffers that a potential White House bid would be anchored in a "burning conviction that we need to fundamentally change the balance of our economy." Vice presidents by the numbers Given that, it might seem strange the … [Read more...] about Can Joe Biden count on union support?
Story highlights Loss of son has figured into Biden's decision-making process, observers say Unclear whether public declarations of grief would help him politically Washington (CNN)For Joe Biden, it's about more than Beau. Biden would likely have jumped into the Democratic primary months ago if his beloved elder son's dying wish that he mount another White House run was the only factor in his political deliberations. Biden, though, also has a list of deeply political and practical obstacles to resolve before deciding on a bid, which already looks like an uphill battle against declared Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. A source close to the vice president said there will be a "family conversation" this weekend to discuss his candidacy. Biden must consider whether his late entry in the race would leave him too far behind in fundraising and organization to mount a campaign, then identify a genuine lane of support that could guide him toward the nomination -- … [Read more...] about Joe Biden navigates politics of son Beau’s death
Story highlights Joe Biden is a grieving father and a potential presidential candidate But as he weighs a bid for the White House, he must also grapple with whether he has a path to victory Washington (CNN)Joe Biden faces a host of complicated emotional questions in deciding whether to run for president. But in the end, his decision could rest on a very simple political one. As he mulls one last bid for the White House, Biden is working through an MRI of the soul, filtering his undimmed dreams of the presidency and gnawing grief for his son Beau, who before he died reportedly urged him to run. He must ask whether his age -- he would be 74 when he took office -- would permit a long, grueling campaign, not to mention a subsequent presidency, and ponder the strains of a race on his family, which has endured more pain than most could bear. "If I were to announce to run I have to be able to commit to all of you that I would be able to give it my whole heart and my whole soul and … [Read more...] about Who would vote for Joe Biden?
Story highlights If Joe Biden decides to run for president, there's no place better than the U.N. to highlight his global leadership credentials Should Biden chose to enter the race, however, he will discover that his foreign policy record is not an unalloyed asset (CNN)At times at the United Nations on Tuesday, it was tough to work out exactly who was president of the United States. Joe Biden might not have the big job -- right now -- but there's no prouder member of the world leaders' club. The vice president was everywhere at the U.N. General Assembly -- it was almost as if Biden was holding his own private U.N. summit. And if he eventually does decide to plunge into the Democratic presidential campaign, what better place to highlight his global leadership credentials?
