It was not at all unfair for Tiger Woods to stay in the moment as the rest of golf cast eyes dreamily forward. Woods’s triumph at Augusta National on Sunday took his major haul to 15. Suddenly, from the recent position where the discussion felt irrelevant, Jack Nicklaus’s record tally of 18 is back within view. “I don’t know if Jack is worried or not,” said Woods. “I really haven’t thought about that yet. I’m sure that I’ll probably think of it going down the road. Maybe, maybe not. But right now it’s a little soon. I’m just enjoying 15.” It did not take long for Nicklaus to respond. Worried? You bet he is. “I thought for a long time that he was going to win again,” Nicklaus said of Woods. “The next two majors are at Bethpage, where he has won, and at Pebble Beach, where he has won. So he has got me shaking in my boots.” As the scale of Woods’s victory, arguably his finest in an … [Read more...] about Will resurgent Tiger Woods beat Jack Nicklaus’s record of 18 majors?

Tiger Woods was asleep at the wheel of his Mercedes with the engine running, according to the police report into his arrest for driving while under the influence in the early hours of Monday morning in Florida. It also states that he was disorientated, struggled to speak and could not walk in a straight line. In the report, which makes clear no alcohol was found in the golfer’s system, Woods is described by police as “co-operative” but “confused”. The officer in charge of his detention also claims the father of two was “unable to walk alone” and found it “hard to keep eyes open”. Woods, a 14-time major champion who is recovering from a fourth back operation, was taken into custody in his home town of Jupiter at 3am on Monday. He was released shortly before 11am, with the case now due to be heard by a Florida judge on 5 July. In his 500th week as world No1, Tiger Woods claimed the 14th major championship of his career, requiring five rounds and one hole to beat Rocco Mediate to the US Open title at Torrey Pines. Woods, playing his first tournament since undergoing knee surgery last month, was in danger of having to pull out of the tournament on Friday, but yesterday forced an 18-hole play-off with Mediate, which he won today at the first extra hole. Woods is now four majors short of Jack Nicklaus's record tally. After staying alive with a 15-foot putt on Sunday, Woods again birdied the last in today's play-off to stop 45-year-old qualifier Mediate becoming the championship's oldest winner. They were both round in level par 71s as a result, Mediate having come from three down after 10 to lead by one on the final tee. But the characteristically tenacious Woods refused to yield and claimed the title when his opponent, ranked 158th in the world, bogeyed the first extra hole of sudden death. It was both men's … [Read more...] about Woods plays through pain barrier to claim US Open at 91st hole

Kyodo/via REUTERS With 15 major championships, Woods is three short of the mark held by Jack Nicklaus, and at age 43 is battling ‘Father Time’ in his quest to catch the Golden Bear. A decade ago it seemed a formality that Woods would overtake Nicklaus, but injuries and scandal were followed by a decade-long drought that only ended when he won the Masters in April. “Do I think he’s going to catch Jack’s record? Personally, I don’t, but I’d love to see it happen, love to see him win … [Read more...] about Eighteen majors a bridge too far for Woods says mentor O’Meara
