THE LIST IS OUT: Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan confirmed yesterday that he sent to Capitol Hill a complete list of military construction projects that could be the source of the $3.6 billion President Trump wants to divert to begin construction of additional barriers along the U.S.-Mexico border this year in defiance of the will of Congress. The 20-page spreadsheet contains hundreds of infrastructure improvements in virtually every state in the union and at many overseas bases that are in various stages of funding for the period 2015 to 2019. It’s impossible to tell what’s on the “hit list,” since every possible project funded with five-year money is listed, and in a cover memo the Pentagon says, “Decisions have not yet been made concerning which border barrier projects will be funded through section 2808 authority.” Section 2808 is the authority the president is invoking under the National Emergencies Act of 1976, which requires a … [Read more...] about Pentagon’s list of military projects gives no hint of which ones will lose out to Trump’s border wall

Democrat Beto O'Rourke said on Thursday that if it was up to him he would "absolutely" tear down the existing border barriers on the U.S.-Mexico border. O'Rourke's comments came in response to Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) asking him: "If you could snap your fingers and make El Paso’s border wall disappear, would you?" "Because this DHS graph shows that when the wall was built, illegal crossings dropped significantly," Crenshaw added. "If you could, would you take the wall down now?" Hayes asked. "Knock it down?" "Yes, absolutely," O'Rourke answered. "I would take the wall down." In 2006, the Secure Fence Act, supported by Sens. Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer and 23 other Democrats, was passed. So the only answer as to why Democrats balk at supporting President Trump’s funding request is politics. The National Border Patrol Council, in an April survey, found an overwhelming 89 percent of America’s frontline Border Patrol agents support building President Trump’s fence along the U.S./Mexico border. Those closest to the problem see a wall system in strategic locations as a necessary piece of the border security puzzle. Some facts stand out. With the disparity of government systems, standard of living and crime between the United States and Mexico and neighboring countries, many sadly risk all they have to enter the U.S. illegally. We are and remain a welcoming country to the more than 1 million people who come here legally every year. Because of natural barriers, an effective border wall would need to … [Read more...] about Politics aside, border walls work
President Trump says that his proposed wall along the Mexico border “will stop much of the drugs from pouring into this country.” We cannot predict the future, but the fact is that most illicit drugs pass undetected through legal ports of entry. Mexican cartels “transport the bulk of their drugs over the Southwest Border through ports of entry (POEs) using passenger vehicles or tractor trailers,” the Drug Enforcement Administration said in a 2015 report. “The drugs are typically secreted in hidden compartments when transported in passenger vehicles or comingled with legitimate goods when transported in tractor trailers.” In an essay published earlier this month, Vanda Felbab-Brown, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, wrote that “a barrier in the form of a wall is increasingly irrelevant to the drug trade as it is now practiced because most of the drugs smuggled into the U.S. from Mexico no longer arrive on the backs of those who cross … [Read more...] about Fact check: Will President Trump’s border wall stop drug smuggling?
I am 62 and a Marine Corps veteran. I have been a Christian Conservative Republican since 1974, when I became eligible to vote, and have always voted a straight Republican ticket, including recent elections. There is one exception: the 2016 presidential election where I wrote in a Conservative Candidate other than President Donald Trump. We Republicans as a whole have failed to acknowledge the president did not get a mandate from the American People. He was elected by the Electoral College and lost the popular vote by millions of votes. For the President to say the American people voted for the wall is not true, the majority of the American people voted against him and his policies. To demonize the Democrats for voting for what their constituents wanted is hypocritical, when that is exactly what he is doing. Last I heard he is the President of every U.S. citizen and should respect their opinions whether Democrat or Republican. The President should also be held … [Read more...] about Reader: Border security is about more than Trump’s border wall
