July 21, 2018 by vietnamnews.vn

Tenants of many apartment buildings in Hà Nội could only use one telecom service provider selected by the building management board for internet or cable television. — Photo tienphong.vn Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — Watching cable television and accessing the internet are now basic needs for the majority of households in Việt Nam, but in many apartment buildings in big cities like Hà Nội and HCM City, residents are unable to freely choose their telecom and internet service provider. The reason for this is that building developers are partnering with one cable TV and internet provider. This prevents apartment residents from choosing providers other than those selected by building owners, Tuổi Trẻ (Youth) newspaper reported. Wishing to remain anonymous, T.A, who lives in Đồng Mô Đại Kim Social Housing in Hà Nội’s Hoàng Mai District, said despite the crowded buildings, the Viet Nam Post and Telecommunication Group (VNPT) was the only telecom service provider in the area. “As … [Read more...] about Telecom monopoly hurts apartment residents

NA deputies question practice of leasing forests to foreign investors

June 12, 2010 by vietnamnews.vn

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat answers questions from NA deputies. —VNA/VNS Photo Nguyeân Dan HA NOI — National Assembly deputies questioned the value of allowing foreign investors to lease Viet Nam's forests yesterday. They also discussed ways to help rice farmers earn an adequate profit during a question-and-answer session with Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Cao Duc Phat. Deputy Le Nhu Tien, central Quang Tri Province, argued that allowing foreign investors to lease 300,000ha of forest land for 50 years would do more harm than good. "Farmers lack land for both agriculture and forests and many people are unemployed," he said. "Leasing forest to foreign investors is a narrow-minded policy." The deputy also asked if the practice complied with Viet Nam's laws and regulations governing national security, the environment and natural resources. Deputy Nguyen Van Tuyet, northern mountainous Yen Bai Province, asked when ministry teams … [Read more...] about NA deputies question practice of leasing forests to foreign investors

A new race down the line

A new race down the line By Bach Dong It is estimated that e-payment via cell phones is unavailable to 70-80% of the local population - PHOTO: THANH HOA The Prime Minister has endorsed the use on a pilot basis of telecom accounts for payments of digital content services and small-scale e-commerce. This move may pave the way for Internet service providers to penetrate deeper into the Fintech business. However, industry experts contend that it is advisable to identify as soon as possible the payment modes to be used by service providers based on which the relevant legal framework system is built. Since the detection of the CNC-led online gambling scandal worth trillions of dong last April, the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) has considerably tightened the management of scratchcards used to pay for digital content services. The strengthening has exerted marked effect on telecom companies and digital content providers with some claiming sales drops of up … [Read more...] about A new race down the line
