Law on Lawyers The Law on Lawyers, which will replace the July 2001 ordinance on January 1, 2007, was adopted yesterday with a nearly 84 per cent approval vote. Article 14 states that apprentice lawyers must complete 18 months of apprenticeship. They are allowed to help their senior lawyers in their duties, but not allowed to take up professional practise or have clients during their period of apprenticeship. This regulation ensures work quality, although it was described as rigid by some deputies during the debate on the law late last month. Committee maps out development goals (28-02-2006) Ha Noi — The Committee of Trade and Investment (CTI) has over the last two days discussed measures to ensure an effective contribution to fulfilling the aims of the Doha Development Agenda, CTI Chairman Chris De Cure said yesterday. Last year, APEC leaders endorsed the so-called Busan Roadmap, which is a strategic initiative for commitment to free trade in the APEC region. The roadmap supports WTO negotiations, particularly the Doha Round, De Cure said, because APEC leaders are of the opinion that the best way to reach trade and investment liberalisation objectives is through WTO negotigations. The CTI worked to establish an agenda for the Busan Roadmap as well as measures to help APEC members fulfil their commitments. One of the measures is technical assistance and capacity building.
