Story highlights Photo journaling meals creates accountability and builds social support Pictures of food do not give useful nutritional information (CNN)At 37 years old, Lisa Pessah-Bloom, a mother of three, was pre-diabetic, struggling with losing postpartum pounds and concerned about her health. "I had gestational diabetes for all three of my pregnancies. After my third, my A1C (blood sugar measurement) kept rising, and the doctor told me for the first time to be careful, because I was on track for diabetes." Pessah-Bloom knew that she had to shed her pregnancy pounds and get her blood sugar under control. She did a Google search on diets for diabetes and stumbled upon the Paleo diet, which includes protein-rich foods like meat, fish, eggs and nuts, as well as vegetables and fruit, but excludes grains, dairy, legumes, sugars and salt. "People said that their diabetes was reversed," she said. Military diet: 3-day diet or dud? She started eating more vegetables and … [Read more...] about How the ‘Instagram diet’ works
Few things are more painful than loving a 15-year-old girl, particularly when she is your child. Ask any mother who has been through a daughter’s adolescence and she will nod in sympathy, maybe even give you the hug you have been missing. It will pass, I yearn for those nights when my daughter, Paulina, couldn’t sleep and I spooned her tiny body in the recesses of mine, her warmth commingling with mine, putting us both into a coma. These days, I barely see or talk to her. She’s busy with school, and when she has free time she would rather be out with friends. I get it. I remember how … [Read more...] about Rediscovering My Daughter Through Instagram
Last spring, I started an Instagram account that featured my dog, Max, trying to eat my home-cooked meals. I was confident it would be an overnight sensation. Foodies and corgi lovers, after all, are two of the biggest audiences on the photo-sharing site. Combining the two, I jokingly told my colleagues, would be my ticket to early retirement (or, at the very least, some free kibble). I did all the homework. I heeded advice posted on the web from internet-famous dog owners and social media mavens: Find a shtick, publish your posts at strategic times, craft funny captions and engage with your audience. I even invited a professional photographer over for a consultation. Yet about four months and @cookingwithfatmax is far from stardom. Despite how cute Max looked or how plump my steamed pork buns appeared, the account stagnated at roughly 300 followers. Max’s “likes” plateaued at an average of about 60. No sponsorship offers appeared in my inbox. So I turned to … [Read more...] about I Tried to Make My Dog an Instagram Celebrity. I Failed.
This story was originally published on September 17, 2018. New York (CNN Business)Instagram has long been a place where people seek fashion inspiration. But it hasn't always been easy to buy the looks you see. On Monday, the company announced new e-commerce tools, including the ability to shop items via Stories and the Explore page. Instagram has been testing the shopping tool in Stories since June, but it'll roll out globally starting Monday. Brands can add one product tag sticker per Story, and users can tap it to see more information, such as price. On the Explore page -- a hub for content recommended for you -- a new shopping channel will display tagged shopping posts from brands you follow or may be interested in. "If you want to shop on Instagram, it's a lot of work," said Vishal Shah, product management director at Instagram. "You have to scroll through Feeds, hop from profile to profile." But the new channel aims to make it easier for users to shop when they're in the mood, … [Read more...] about Instagram just made it a lot easier to shop on the app
