The powerful tsunami that struck Indonesia’s two most-populous islands this weekend was the second deadly tsunami to strike the country in 2018, a year that has brought more than its fair share of disasters to the nation. Coming without warning, the wave that rose from the Sunda Strait to hit Sumatra and Java was thought to have been caused by an undersea landslide that was set off by volcanic activity. On Sunday, residents and rescuers were left to sift through the hundreds of damaged buildings in search of survivors and victims. JAKARTA, Indonesia — The hunt was on Sunday for survivors of a tsunami in Indonesia’s Sunda Strait that struck without warning on the country’s two most-populated islands, killing at least 222 people, injuring more than 800 others and destroying hundred of houses and other buildings. It was the second deadly tsunami in Indonesia this year, capping what will be the country’s worst year for disasters in more than a decade, with earthquakes, floods, fires and an airline crash that have killed more than 4,500 people total. (CNN)At least 222 people were killed, with hundreds more injured and missing, including members of a pop band, after a tsunami hit the coastline of west Java and Sumatra, Indonesia on Saturday. There was no warning before the waves struck the Pandeglang district, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, head of public relations at Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency.
