For now, all eyes are on the extraordinary spectacle of a televised attempt to impeach Donald Trump. Yet only a year from now, the presidential election will be over, the votes counted and the victory speeches made. By whom? Most polls currently suggest it will be a Democrat who finds himself or herself huddled with a transition team while Mr Trump contemplates a return to his newly chosen home state of Florida. My advice is that anyone planning to bet their house on such an outcome had better line up a friendly neighbour with a spare room, just in case. For one thing, we don’t yet know who the President’s opponent will be. In my research among American voters since 2016 I have found Democrats to be in a furious and increasingly radical mood. The disdain showered on President Donald Trump (pictured with State Republican Chairman Edward F. Cox on April 14, 2016) may backfire as many Democrats feel they are going to have to make some kind of compromise in time for the … [Read more...] about Think this impeachment hearing is the end of Trump? close Video Obama lays into 'politically woke' call-out culture Former President Barack Obama offers words of wisdom to activists and candidates; Peter Doocy reports from Concord, New Hampshire. Former President Barack Obama on Friday warned 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls to pay attention to what voters actually think -- warning that most of them don’t want to “tear down the system.” “The average American doesn't think we have to completely tear down the system and remake it. And I think it's important for us not to lose sight of that,” Obama said. OBAMA SOUNDS OFF ON CANCEL CULTURE, 'WOKE' PURITY: 'THAT'S NOT ACTIVISM' “There are a lot of persuadable voters and there are a lot of Democrats out there who just want to see things make sense. They just don't want to see crazy stuff," he said. "They want to see things a little more fair, they want to see things a little more just. And how we approach that I think will … [Read more...] about Obama takes veiled shot at Warren and Sanders, warns 2020 Dems Americans don’t want to ‘tear down the system’

So many of you wrote back in response to last week’s column on one-sided love. While it resonated with a lot of you, many also argued that their heartache has resulted from a bad break up and not from unrequited love. So I’ve dug out what I’d written a while back on the subject of not letting a break-up break you up. Hope it helps. Here’s a scene for you to visualise. Setting: my home. Weather: cloudy (aha!). Me: desperately wanting to sit in the balcony, have a cup of tea in peace, and watch neighbours quarrel over parking. And then she walked in, all geared up to spoil whatever peace of whatever mind I have. She sobbed. I gave her a tissue. She sobbed again, and extended her hand. You would think one tissue should last longer than a nano sob but it wasn’t the right time to act all kanjoos. I gave another. She then burst into a fit of tears and my heart sank. I had run out — of tissues, of patience.Read More| A Calmer … [Read more...] about A Calmer You, by Sonal Kalra: Break up but don’t break down
A report from Diabetes UK says that the number of obese people in the UK has doubled over the past 20 years, with record numbers treated for type 2 diabetes. There are now 13 million adults with a body mass index (BMI) of at least 30 (defining obesity), which is just under 30% of over-16s, with 20% of children obese by the time they leave primary school. This puts extra strain on the NHS, with care required for cancers, heart problems, knee replacements and other obesity-related conditions. All of which recalls Simon Stevens, the chief executive of NHS England, terming the obesity crisis “the new smoking” in terms of the calamitous effect on the NHS. However, obesity differs in one key societal respect: people suffering from smoking-derived illnesses aren’t routinely mocked and insulted. We know the drill with obesity by now or should do. While personal responsibility should never be discounted, there are well-documented complex social factors contributing to obesity, … [Read more...] about We don’t mock smokers with lung cancer, so why sneer at the obese?
