HÀ NỘI – The eighth of 18 total patients has died in the recent medical tragedy at northern Hòa Bình Province’s General Hospital . Nguyễn Thị Bích Nguyên , 46, from Lương Sơn District died yesterday of suspected anaphylactic shock during her kidney dialysis after more than four days struggling in the provincial hospital ’s intensive care unit. According to Dr Hoàng Công Tình, deputy head of the intensive care unit of Hòa Bình General Hospital, Nguyên was moved to the unit in the morning of May 29 in very critical conditions after the medical incident. Thus she could not be transferred to an upper level hospital, such as the Bạch Mai Hospital in Hà Nội. The Ministry of Public Security’s Criminal Science Institute arrived at the conclusion after analysing samples. Water samples from dialysis machines number 10 and 13 had a low level of potential of hydrogen (pH) and high conductivity; the florua level in machines number 10 and 13 were 245 and 260 times higher, respectively, than permissible limit of Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation ( AAMI ). The other dialysis machines tested also had higher florua levels than permitted. According to AAMI, the maximum florua level allowed in the kidney dialysis water is 0.2 mg per litre. Hà Nội Obstetrics Hospital was asked to organise training courses and monitor the process at the obstetric departments of other city hospitals. Previously, the Ministry of Health requested the municipal Health Department to issue harsh penalties to medical workers involved with the six-year-old case of babies being switched at birth at Ba Vì Hospital.
