Hoang Phuc Lam, deputy director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, told a recent meeting that the two central provinces of Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue saw heavy downpours early this morning, with rainfall measuring 200 millimeters lasting for some six hours. Be prepared for the worst The Saigon Times Daily Unprecedented rainfall last Friday plunged Phu Quoc Island off Kien Giang Province into chaos when vast areas of Duong Dong Town and elsewhere on the island were left in deep floodwater and many residential quarters isolated, while Phu Quoc International Airport came to a halt. Numerous questions have thus surfaced as to why an island can get inundated, and if there is a way for Phu Quoc to become resilient to weather extremes. Last Friday’s precipitation, measured at 358mm, was the highest ever recorded on Phu Quoc in 100 years since weather records were kept, according to the national weather forecasting center. Phu Quoc authorities mobilized thousands of military and police personnel to come to the islanders’ rescue, as torrential rains showed no signs of abating.
