World Blood Donor Day 2017 opens in HCM City

VNS Photo Bồ Xuân Hiệp Viet Nam News HCM CITY — The American Chamber of Commerce in Việt Nam (AmCham Việt Nam) helped organise blood donations in HCM City yesterday during the World Blood Donor Day 2017, initiated by the World Health Organisation (WHO). AmCham, together with the British Business Group Việt Nam, is working with the HCM City Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion and the HCM City Humanitarian Blood Donation Centre to carry out the donor campaign at seven locations from July 12-21. The first day saw 134 people donating a total of 171.2 blood units or 42,800 ml of blood. The seven-day event is expected to attract more than 1,000 blood donors. After three working days, the council approved a resolution promoting socio-economic development for the second half of the year in order to achieve the targeted State revenue collection and Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) growth of 8.4–8.7 per cent. To reach the target, the council will request the municipal People’s Committee to mobilise private capital, especially through public-private partnerships (PPP) for infrastructure development, and speed up important construction works related to easing traffic, flooding, environmental pollution and urban renovation. HCM City ’s People’s Committee has approved a project aiming to improve the quality of healthcare regarding infectious diseases and HIV/AIDS. —  Photo plo.vn HCM CITY — HCM City ’s People’s Committee has approved a project aiming to improve the quality of healthcare regarding infectious diseases and HIV/AIDS. It aims to enhance and maintain the capacity of preventing, diagnosing and responding to contagious diseases and providing healthcare service for HIV treatment in 2017. The project, with funding of VNĐ35 billion provided by the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, provides preventive healthcare service for HIV/AIDS in a sustainable and effective way, contributing to national HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. Xuyên Á becomes 1st private hospital in HCM City to do kidney transplant

Xuyên Á Hospital successfully performed the first kidney transplant by any hospital in HCM City on a 37-year-old man on Tuesday. — Photo courtesy of Xuyên Á Hospital Viet Nam News HCM CITY —  Doctors from Xuyên Á Hospital have successfully performed the first kidney transplant done at a private medical facility in HCM City. On Tuesday a 37-year-old man from Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu Province received a kidney donated by his mother. The man had been suffering from late-stage kidney failure, and faced a high risk of fatality, since last October. After a successful four-hour surgery the patient’s health has stabilised and is being closely monitored by doctors. Dr Nguyễn Văn Châu, general director of Xuyên Á Hospital, said the successful surgery was conducted with support from doctors from Chợ Rẫy Hospital in the city. HCM City plans to launch action month on occupational safety and health in May. — VNS Photo Ngọc Diệp Viet Nam News HCM CITY — HCM City plans to launch an action-month for occupational safety and health in May as part of the city’s effort to raise public awareness about the issues. Speaking at a meeting held in the city on April 5, Nguyễn Quốc Việt, a representative of the city’s Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, said an opening ceremony would be held on May 6 with an exhibition displaying 80 photos on Nguyễn Huệ Pedestrian Street in District 1 from May 6-15. HCM City launches birth control, reproductive healthcare campaign

A campaign to provide reproductive health and birth control services is being directed at households in HCM City’s disadvantaged areas. — VNA/VNS Photo Viet Nam News HCM CITY — The HCM City Department of Health and Hóc Môn District People’s Committee have launched a campaign to provide reproductive healthcare and birth control services to people working in industrial zones and living in economically disadvantaged areas. Launched in 2013, the annual campaign this year will shift from a focus on population and birth control to population and development. Nguyễn Hữu Hưng, deputy of the city’s Department of Health, said the campaign would focus on giving counselling and advices to households in disadvantaged areas. HCM City tourism sector targets tourists from India

Bùi Tá Hoàng Vũ, director of the city’s Department of Tourism, said new policies were being designed to attract more tourists, especially from India. HCM City seeks to strengthen grassroots healthcare

She had cut her hand with a broken glass and bleeding severely. She then had to go to the District 11 Hospital. For years health stations in the country have mostly failed to provide both immediate medical help and regular treatment. HCM City is home to 319 health stations which only treat 3 per cent of the total number of patients in the city, according to the Department of Health. Lack of doctors, poor facilities and limited quantities of drugs mean they are not favoured by people seeking medical treatment.
