New Delhi (CNN Business)Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has found himself in hot water on his first trip to India, after posing with a poster many Indians found offensive. Twitter user Anna Vetticad tweeted a photograph of Dorsey holding up a poster reading "smash Brahminical patriarchy," a reference to the highest caste — or social group — in Hindu society. The group picture was taken following a roundtable discussion with Indian women journalists and activists, and it drew Dorsey into a hugely sensitive issue about power structures in Indian society. Tensions between higher castes like Brahmins and lower-caste Dalits — a community of people once known as the untouchables — have been escalating in recent years. Activists say the rise of Hindu nationalism under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has increased the oppression of lower castes. Many Indians reacted with outrage, accusing Dorsey and Twitter of "hate speech" that singled out one group in society. "Tomorrow if … [Read more...] about Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey sparks a ‘hate speech’ storm in India
Recent letters to the editor of the News Leader advocate the repeal of the 45 words of the First Amendment to the U.S Constitution. These 45 words guarantee freedom of religion, speech, the press and peaceful assembly. One letter attacked the News Leader for printing the commentary of Michael Gerson and Jenifer Rubin. Full disclosure, I am a flaming, tree hugging, progressive liberal … who wouldn't vote for a (Trump supporter) for so much as toilet attendant, but I do read the "alternative facts" of the so called conservative right published in the News Leader by such contributors as Marc Thiessen. All commentators have a right to be heard. Progressive commentators are attempting to hold a mirror up to society so that we can see ourselves and what we have become in the era of tribalism, bigotry, ignorance, hate and violence promoted by Mr. Trump. The other letter seemed to advocate for the establishment of the "Judeo-Christian" state religion. Nowhere in my reading of the … [Read more...] about Is immorality, dishonesty, bigotry and hate speech the new normal for our leader?
Talk about a rough Monday morning. Pundit Alex Jones found his radio and video show, and other content produced by the far-right site Infowars, removed from Apple, Facebook, Spotify and YouTube. The cumulative actions represent the largest efforts yet against Jones, a conspiracy theorist who most famously promoted the idea that the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school shooting never happened and was staged. Several families affected by the shooting, and an FBI agent who responded to the attack, have sued Jones for defamation. He is seeking to have the cases dismissed. Facebook said on Monday that four pages belonging to Jones were removed for violating the social network's policy against hate speech. Also on Monday, the entirety of hundreds of episodes of "The Alex Jones Show" had been removed from music streaming service Spotify. Those takedowns came just hours after Apple late Sunday removed all episodes of the show hosted by Jones and four other Infowars-related podcasts from … [Read more...] about Apple, Facebook, YouTube and Spotify remove ‘Alex Jones Show,’ Infowars over hate speech
Pittsburgh (CNN)In a short but impassioned sermon Saturday, Rabbi Jeffrey Myers blamed politicians for a rise in hateful rhetoric, saying it led to the massacre at his synagogue last week in which 11 Jews were slain in the worst anti-Semitic attack in US history. Myers said he delivered that message personally to President Donald Trump when he and first lady Melania Trump visited Tree of Life/Or L'Simcha synagogue, the site of the shooting here in Pittsburgh, on Tuesday. "I said to him, 'Mr. President, hate speech leads to hateful actions. Hate speech leads to what happened in my sanctuary, where seven of my congregants were slaughtered. I witnessed it with my eyes." According to police, the man accused of the attack yelled that he wanted to "kill Jews," in part because Jewish groups have been helping refugees settle in the United States. Myers was speaking at a "unity" Shabbat service at Congregation Beth Shalom in Pittsburgh, where members of all three congregations that met … [Read more...] about Pittsburgh rabbi told Trump that hate speech led to synagogue massacre
Jerusalem (CNN)Facebook has restored the account of Yair Netanyahu, the eldest son of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after it was temporarily suspended for "hate speech" over a series of posts targeting Muslims and Palestinians. In one post from early this month, written in Hebrew, the 27-year-old wrote, "There will not be peace here until: 1. All the Jews leave the land of Israel. 2. All the Muslims leave the land of Israel. I prefer the second option." In another he wrote, "Do you know where there are no attacks, in Iceland and Japan. That's because there are no Muslims populations." In a third post, he also called Palestinians "monsters" who should be "encouraged to immigrate" to Arab countries. Facebook initially removed the posts from its platform, but then decided to suspend him for 24 hours after he reposted a screen grab showing the posts Facebook had deleted.
