Some of the world’s biggest music stars will be recognised for their achievements at the BRIT Awards 2019 last night. The ceremony took place at The O2 in London. It was presented by Jack Whitehall, who reprised his hosting role for a second year in a row, and Clara Amfo. Fans were able to watch the action on the small screen, with the show being broadcast from 8pm on ITV. The 61st Annual Grammy Awards was hosted by Alicia Keys last night, and featured performances from some of the world’s most famous faces. Stars including Childish Gambino, Lady Gaga, and Ariana Grande scooped one of the prestigious awards at the ceremony. It’s possible that the most out-there moment of fashion week took place Sunday night thousands of miles away from the New York catwalks — sorry, red carpet — at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. I am speaking, of course, of Cardi B’s Grammys entrance as Venus emerging from her clam in vintage Thierry Mugler (circa 1995), her top half covered in a nude body suit and molded bustier, her bottom half in black velvet that exploded into a pink satin abalone frame around her pearl-encrusted waist. It was a little absurd and a little unwalkable and deep in the realm of costume. A steady stream of indelible pop culture moments celebrating blackness has led some to proclaim February 2016 the best #BlackHistoryMonth ever, with a melanin rainbow fistbump emoji for emphasis. Some might argue that pop culture moments are ephemeral and don't have lasting value. Obviously, no event this month compares to the passage of the Voting Rights Act or other civil rights milestones that increased political or economic power for black people. Even if we did not reach the absolute pinnacle of Black History Month, it's been pretty memorable. Thoughts, emotions and experiences typically confined to the black community permeated mainstream America in unprecedented ways.
