I had planned on speaking with Fox Business host Trish Regan about her coverage of the crisis in Venezuela and the U.S.-approved attempt to overthrow President Nicolás Maduro. But we wound up discussing a topic much closer to home: whether democratic socialism in America, as many conservatives and moderates fear, is a gateway to authoritarianism. Regan is in a unique position to offer commentary on that topic. A longtime business journalist at CNBC, Bloomberg and CBS News, and now the host of "Trish Regan Primetime" on Fox Business Network, she was among the first in media to cover the political and economic collapse of Venezuela and has interviewed opposition leader Juan Guaidó and other top Venezuelans involved in the crisis. She has covered Latin America -- from an avowedly pro-capitalist perspective -- for years, and because she speaks Spanish can interview other top players. Whether or not you agree with Regan's views on socialism, the crisis in Venezuela isn't just an … [Read more...] about Fox Business host Trish Regan tells Salon: AOC-style socialism could turn U.S. into Venezuela

An Associated Press report on Fox’s coverage of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez includes a March quote from Fox Business host Stuart Varney that provided a candid assessment of the interest in the freshman Democrat from New York. “We have an AOC segment every day, almost every single hour,” Varney said with a laugh in March on his Fox Business show, according to the Associated Press. “She’s good for our ratings.” Varney’s comment was included in an AP story on a study, conducted by liberal watchdog group Media Matters, that declared Fox News “obsessed” with Ocasio-Cortez. The study found that the congresswoman, who identifies as a democratic socialist, is mentioned around 75 times per day on Fox News and sister channel Fox Business. As AP notes, coverage of Ocasio-Cortez on Fox leans negative: Tucker Carlson has called her an “idiot wind bag,” a “pompous little twit,” a “fake revolutionary,” … [Read more...] about Flashback: Fox Business Host Varney Says Ocasio-Cortez is ‘Good for Our Ratings’
Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo is not exactly known as a tough interviewer when it comes to the Trump administration, which helps explain why she scored a rare sit-down with the president this week. But given the chance to speak with Kellyanne Conway on Thursday morning, she somewhat surprisingly spent nearly 12 minutes grilling her about the bizarre feud that has developed between her husband George Conway and her boss, President Trump. “Your boss calling your husband a ‘whack job,’ what’s going on?” Bartiromo asked. Instead of defending her husband from the president’s attacks, Conway pointed out that George Conway has also been “very critical of the president publicly, which is unlike him, just because he’s traditionally been a very private person.” She proceeded to lash out at her husband for “not supporting the agenda of the president and my work there.” Conway told the host that she grew up in a “has … [Read more...] about Fox Business Host Grills Kellyanne: Is This All ‘Schtick’?
Considering that Fox is currently dealing with the fallout over one of its opinion hosts suggesting that a Muslim congresswoman isn’t American because she wears a hijab, maybe it wasn’t the most ideal timing for Fox Business Network host Stuart Varney to claim Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is a “jihad” against Silicon Valley businesses. Last week, Warren proposed a plan to break up large tech companies, including Facebook, Amazon, and Google. “Today’s big tech companies have too much power — too much power over our economy, our society, and our democracy,” the 2020 hopeful declared, adding that breaking up mergers will create competition and pressure the companies to listen to consumer’ concerns. While the progressive lawmaker’s proposal has found some unexpected support from allies of President Trump, who believe social-media platforms censor conservatives, it would appear Trump’s more pro-business supporters … [Read more...] about Fox Business Host Stuart Varney: Elizabeth Warren Is on a ‘Jihad Against Billionaires’
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez fired back at Fox Business host Charles Payne after he asked how many black people she has on her staff. The New York Democrat had defended her colleague, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, and her claim black HUD staffer Lynne Patton was used as a “prop” by Republicans at Michael Cohen‘s hearing this week. Patton was invited by Republican Congressman Mark Meadows to prove President Donald Trump wasn’t racist. “Total bravery from @RashidaTlaib as she reminds the nation that tokenism *is* racism,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter, linking to a video of Tlaib’s clash with Meadows. “How many Black people are o [sic] your staff?” Payne replied to Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter. “We have Black staff,” Ocasio-Cortez shot back. “We don’t parade them around to show the world how diverse our team is, and use that as some kind of evidence of the absence of racism. That’s what tokenism is.” … [Read more...] about Ocasio-Cortez Fires Back After Fox Business Host Asks How Many Black People She Has on Staff
