ONE thousand games by this evening. Already 1,244 players. And, of course, just one major tournament win. But who would be in England’s greatest ever side? SunSport asked Martin Lipton to prove it really is The Impossible Job - and pick the all-time Three Lions starting team and bench. We allowed him seven substitutes - and demanded he explain himself. LIPTON’S LIONS (4-3-3) GORDON BANKS One of the easier choices. Plenty of top keepers over the years but hard to look beyond “Banks of England”. Those saves from Eusebio in 1966 and Pele four years later are rightly part of Three Lions storybook. The surprise is that he only earned 73 caps.PHIL NEAL That image of him alongside Graham Taylor on the England bench may have warped some views of the right-back. But we are talking about England’s most decorated player and a critical part of both Liverpool and the national side. Nerveless with a spot-kick as well. TERRY BUTCHER A proper stopper, who could play more … [Read more...] about England’s ultimate all-time XI according to SunSport featuring World Cup winners, centurions and goals galore

There might have been a crucial meeting of world leaders, Brexit and a kerfuffle about the BBC licence fee to fret about. But Ben Stokes’s batting heroics have given Britain’s newspapers the perfect bank holiday Monday front page. Every front page published south of the border is emblazoned with a picture of England’s brilliant allrounder celebrating after hitting the winning runs at Headingley in a match that evoked the legendary exploits of Ian Botham and Bob Willis at the same ground 38 years ago. The Times and the Telegraph both decided it was such a momentous occasion that it was worth doing away with the usual front page conventions and promotions. Both lay the masthead and headline on top of the picture with the Times declaring “Stokes leads England to epic Ashes comeback” and the Telegraph sufficing with “Howzat!”. The latter’s veteran cricket writer, Scyld Berry, says Stokes’s knock was the greatest ever played by an … [Read more...] about ‘Go urn, my son’: what the papers say about England’s Ashes comeback

Jeremy Corbyn’s proposal to form a caretaker government to stop a no-deal Brexit has received mixed reactions from other opposition leaders and rebel Tories – so would he be able to gain a majority? A number of MPs will want to wait to see how events unfold when parliament returns in September before making their decision. The vast majority of Conservatives are not prepared to bring down their own government – and even those vehemently opposed to a no-deal Brexit do not want to hand Corbyn the keys to No 10. One Tory who would consider the plan is Guto Bebb, who said a short-term Corbyn government would be less damaging than “the generational damage that would be caused by a no-deal Brexit”. The former justice minister Phillip Lee is also a possible supporter, having openly suggested he could quit the Conservatives. The Scottish National party, Plaid Cymru and the Green party’s Caroline Lucas are prepared to engage with the proposal. Of the 14 … [Read more...] about Who can Corbyn convince to back him as caretaker PM?
