Donald Trump’s GOP loyalists like a ‘cult of personality,’ says ex-governor
DW: Republicans in Congress, aside from the verbal admonishments, have not exactly been trying very hard to rein President Trump in, have they? Should they finally step up now after the ouster of Attorney General Jeff Sessions? Christine Todd Whitman: Congress should play its role. Congress, [the House] and the Senate have roles to play and they abdicated those in many instances. They are the third body of the tripartite government and they need to start acting like it. But it seems to have almost become a cult of personality and they don't dare take him on. But they have a role. They are the brakes [on an unchecked executive branch]. If they see behavior that they feel is not in the best interest of the country as a whole or is undermining the basic statutes and laws of our country, they should speak up — more than speak up, they should take some action. Former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman served as EPA chief under President George W. Bush … [Read more...] about Donald Trump’s GOP loyalists like a ‘cult of personality,’ says ex-governor
Donald Trump ex-campaign chief Manafort pleads guilty
Paul Manafort, the former campaign chairman for US President Donald Trump, has pled guilty to charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States and witness tampering, court documents indicated on Friday. The revelations come three weeks after Manafort was convicted in a separate trial on eight counts related to financial fraud as part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into election interference. The new charges relate to his political lobbying work in Ukraine, where he worked on behalf of ousted President Viktor Yanukovych, both in Kyiv and in the US. Although such work is required to be registered with US authorities under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, Manafort neglected to do so for years. During this time, Manafort was also actively working for several Russian oligarchs. In response to the guilty plea, the White House emphasized that the charges relating to Manafort's activities had "nothing to do" with the 2016 election. "This had absolutely nothing to do with … [Read more...] about Donald Trump ex-campaign chief Manafort pleads guilty
Anthony Scaramucci Says ‘Sedated’ Donald Trump Is Losing Confidence: ‘He’s Got a Loss of Personality’
Anthony Scaramucci said a "sedated" President Donald Trump looked like he has had a loss of confidence and personality during his North Carolina rally. The former White House communications director, who has clashed with Trump in recent weeks, also predicted the situation in the volatile administration will deteriorate further. "It's going to get worse because [of] what [Trump] said today," Scaramucci, whose turbulent tenure in the administration lasted just 12 days, told CNN's Don Lemon last night. "He takes nobody's counsel. There's nobody in the White House—if you remember his chief of staff [John] Kelly at least had the strength of personality to say 'hey, that's probably not the best thing to do, don't do that.' And so he probably curbed some of the exigencies of his personality." Scaramucci pointed to the past few weeks of the administration, which has included a report of potential corruption linked to Trump's Turnberry golf resort in Scotland and his clash with NOAA over … [Read more...] about Anthony Scaramucci Says ‘Sedated’ Donald Trump Is Losing Confidence: ‘He’s Got a Loss of Personality’

Donald Trump Criticized National Debt but His New Tax Cut Plan Would Increase It
President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans have unveiled a long-awaited outline of their tax reform plan that will affect all American individuals and businesses, but one big thing was left out: how to pay for it. It's not exactly clear how much the plan would increase the federal deficit, which is $693 billion during the current fiscal year, which ends this month, but estimates say the proposal could add more than $2 trillion to the national debt over the next decade. The national debt is currently over $20 trillion (more than 100 percent of U.S. gross domestic product), a level that worries many economists and policy analysts. The outline of the plan does not itemize the costs of the proposed tax changes, so independent groups and analysts are left to make their own guesses as to the costs. "My biggest concern is the price," says Marc Goldwein, senior vice president and senior policy director for the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, an independent watchdog … [Read more...] about Donald Trump Criticized National Debt but His New Tax Cut Plan Would Increase It
