These affiliate partnerships do not influence our editorial content. Apple has decisively transitioned its new MacBook Pros to use the slim, unidirectional new USB-C port first introduced on the Retina MacBook a year and a half ago. Its latest MacBook Pro machines not only supply more connectors, but also support the enhanced new USB 3.1 Gen 2 and Thunderbolt 3 protocols for blazing fast wired connectivity and high resolution displays. Flex your power Like the Retina MacBook, the new MacBook Pro models no longer use MagSafe, Apple's quick release magnetic plug for delivering power. Power is now delivered via USB-C, which fits snuggly enough to pull your laptop off the edge of a table if something inadvertently tugs the cable hard enough. While many are weeping over the death of their beloved MagSafe, I've … [Read more...] about Everything you need to know about USB-C & Thunderbolt 3 on Apple’s new MacBook Pro
PSA: Thunderbolt 3 cables longer than 0.5m generally don’t support USB 3.1 speeds

These affiliate partnerships do not influence our editorial content. USB-C is the future of computer connectivity, but there is a great deal of confusion over USB-C, Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.1, and what any given cable with USB-C connectors is capable of. AppleInsider breaks it all down. Apple introduced USB-C to its user base with the retina 12-inch MacBook. At the time, it was a fancy USB port limited to USB 3.0 speeds of 5Gbit per second, and was officially called USB 3.1 Type-C Generation 1. The same physical port was used in the 2016 MacBook Pro refresh, offering a faster, more capable Thunderbolt 3 port with the same USB-C physical connector. The Thunderbolt 3 protocol allows for 40Gbit per second — assuming the cabling for it is right. But, right now, confusion reigns — and a simple choice that Apple made in the 2016 … [Read more...] about PSA: Thunderbolt 3 cables longer than 0.5m generally don’t support USB 3.1 speeds
USB 3, USB 4, Thunderbolt, & USB-C — everything you need to know

These affiliate partnerships do not influence our editorial content. With the varieties of USB and Thunderbolt terminology floating about, as well as new versions being adopted by Apple and other device producers, sorting out the mess can be a problem. Here's what you need to know about USB 3, USB 4, Thunderbolt 3, and Thunderbolt 4. For most users, there are two general families of multi-purpose connections: USB and Thunderbolt. Both have their benefits and their foibles, as well as sharing many characteristics, but the two technology trees are, largely, quite different. If you don't read any further, here's your main takeaway: The term "USB-C" by itself doesn't specify anything for data, charging, or video beyond the physicality of the connector. But, as you might expect, there are a lot of details behind USB … [Read more...] about USB 3, USB 4, Thunderbolt, & USB-C — everything you need to know
USB-C cable shopping for an iPad or Thunderbolt 3 Mac is still a nightmare for consumers
Feature AppleInsider is supported by its audience and may earn commission as an Amazon Associate and affiliate partner on qualifying purchases. These affiliate partnerships do not influence our editorial content. USB-C is the future of computer connectivity, but in the two years we've been using it there remains a great deal of confusion over USB-C, Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.1, and what any given cable with USB-C connectors is capable of. AppleInsider breaks it all down again, makes some specific cable recommendations, and talks about why we think it isn't the last time we're going to have this conversation. Apple introduced USB-C to its user base with the Retina 12-inch MacBook. At the time, it was in essence a basic USB port that could power the Mac from an external source, yet limited to USB 3.0 speeds of 5Gbit per second. It was officially called USB 3.1 type C Generation 1. The same physical port was used in the 2016 MacBook Pro refresh, offering a … [Read more...] about USB-C cable shopping for an iPad or Thunderbolt 3 Mac is still a nightmare for consumers
These ethnic women are ’never too old to learn’
The class meets four times a week, with nearly 30 women from minority ethnic groups in Nam Xuân Commune in the Central Highlands province of Đắk Nông. — VNA/VNS Photo Dương Phong Viet Nam News Dương Phong KRÔNG NÔ, ĐẮK NÔNG — Some nights, when only one classroom light shines at Nam Xuân Commune’s Lê Lợi Elementary School, you can find students older than the usual elementary schooler. The school offers a literacy class for nearly 30 middle-aged women from minority ethnic groups in the commune--like Thái, Tày and Dao--who usually speak their ethnic language rather than Vietnamese. The class is dubbed the “three Zeroes” class, because here, students don’t have to pay any fees, teachers don’t receive any payments and there are no men. The youngest student is 35 years old, while some others are already grandmothers. However, in class they seem to leave their ages and roles behind to enjoy being ‘students’ for the first time in their lives. Helping Hà Nội’s homeless
Christopher Axe, leader of Help Hanoi’s Homeless group, checks his home-cooked food to be given to the homeless. — VNS Photos Viet Nam News by Paul Kennedy & Bảo Hoa Not all heroes wear capes. To Hà Nội’s homeless, the volunteers who scour the streets weekly offering a helping hand are all The Avengers rolled into one. They may not possess super powers, but the dozens of men and women who deliver food, toiletries, medicine and clothing to those less fortunate are the real heroes. The group was started by a Brit, Christopher Axe, who’s no stranger to this sort of work. A writer by profession, Christopher has been helping the homeless for many years. His projects began in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, where he lived for six months before moving to Việt Nam. There he would cook, collect and deliver much needed meals to those in need. He may be more than 8,000 kilometres away, but his actions remain the same. "There are a lot of people in Hà … [Read more...] about Helping Hà Nội’s homeless
Smart Home Diary: Ending up with iPhone-controlled blinds after all … [Video]
Once you start down the HomeKit route, the convenience of having everything controlled from a single app is pretty addictive. So these days I view HomeKit compatibility as a pretty non-negotiable item with any smart home tech. But there are limits. And paying £16,500 ($22,000) for a Lutron system was definitely well beyond them! However, the thing about having a lot of windows – especially floor to ceiling ones – is that good-quality blinds are expensive no matter what. And in the winter garden (glazed balcony) in particular, which is where we spend a huge amount of our time, we wanted really nice ones. So when we found that we could have great blinds with iPhone control and promised HomeKit support for a little under half that price, we gulped and went for it … I should explain that we didn’t decide on spending that kind of money casually. It was a somewhat gradual process. My partner loves Luxaflex Duette blinds – which I’ll talk more about in a moment. These aren’t … [Read more...] about Smart Home Diary: Ending up with iPhone-controlled blinds after all … [Video]
Chitter-chatter on fish sauce
Chitter-chatter on fish sauce By Nguyen Yen Binh Once in a while, in the midst of the hectic life, a random thought may cross the mind of a Vietnamese. And in that very moment of unmindfulness, does the person in question ever think about a day when he or she doesn’t have fish sauce, the most popular condiment in Vietnam? Fish sauce is both a dish and a seasoning, so familiar that you do not realize it is present throughout the life of a Vietnamese. Fish sauce when used to season and marinate brings out a delicious taste, but it is left out in the name of the dish it helps enhance the flavor. There are days when we Vietnamese eat rice with fish sauce. In this case, fish sauce is undeniably a dish. Eating rice with fish sauce! It sounds a little sad, as it seems someone is having a hard time. Still, it is not necessarily the case. In oriental medicine, fish sauce is a cure for cold. If you have ever had a meal with rice—the newly harvested one that is soft and still carries the … [Read more...] about Chitter-chatter on fish sauce
Adults share in kids’ grade pressure at school
Last week, Việt Nam News asked our readers how they expect their children to study at school, following a much-discussed letter a father sent to the Ministry of Education and Training responding to the immense pressure placed on his son to thrive. Here are some responses: Mai Quế Nguyễn, Vietnamese, Hà Nội I totally agree with this father. Actually, the majority of parents in Việt Nam still pay too much attention to their children’s marks and performance at schools, which certainly put great pressure on the kids. I do not expect too much from my son’s study results at school. I want him to study depending on his capacity, not my expectation, and at the same time find time to play and develop soft skills. Knowledge only plays a part in the success of my son in the future. What makes me really happy now is to see my son feel happy to go to school each day without bearing any pressure from his parents. Therefore, I chose a school that does not force my son to study … [Read more...] about Adults share in kids’ grade pressure at school
