Low-carbohydrate diets have fallen in and out of favor since before the days of Atkins. But now an even stricter version of low-carb eating called the ketogenic diet is gaining popular attention, igniting a fierce scientific debate about its potential risks and benefits. Both the Atkins and ketogenic diets encourage followers to cut carbs from their diets. But while the Atkins diet gradually increases carbs over time, keto places firm limits on carbs and protein. This way of eating depletes the body of glucose, forcing it to primarily burn fat and produce an alternate source of fuel called ketones. A typical ketogenic diet restricts carbs to less than 10 percent of calories and limits protein to 20 percent, while fat makes up the rest. The keto diet has been popularized in best-selling books, promoted by celebrities and touted on social media as an antidote to various ailments. Proponents say it causes substantial weight loss and can help those with Type 2 diabetes dramatically … [Read more...] about The Keto Diet Is Popular, but Is It Good for You?
Dieting makes you fat essay
Beyoncé’s 2018 Coachella headline set was a feat of meticulous preparation. She conceived a show that would pay tribute to the culture of historically black colleges and universities. Having just given birth to twins, she worked for months on the exacting choreography and arrangements. And she went on a demanding vegan diet that also eschewed sugar, carbs, dairy and alcohol. “I’m hungry,” she says in behind-the-scenes documentary Homecoming. This, we’re given to understand, is a cautionary tale – she did not wake up like this. “I definitely pushed myself further than I knew I could,” she admits, “and I learned a very valuable lesson: I will never, ever push myself that far again.” Except that Beyoncé – along with an “exercise physiologist” and founding CEO of a “plant-based lifestyle solutions company” named Marco Borges – are now selling the diet she followed to prepare for her … [Read more...] about Beyoncé’s crash diet plan sells an impossible, damaging ideal
Perhaps the most surprising thing that Leonard Nimoy did with his time on earth, more surprising even than playing an iconic human-Vulcan space professional on television, was publishing a book called The Full Beauty Project . It’s a collection of black and white photographs of fat women in elegant formations, for example cavorting in a circle in imitation of Matisse’s La Danse . In her 2010 essay-collection-meets-memoir Shrill , Lindy West described coming across Nimoy’s book at a crucial moment in her personal development. “I was ragingly uncomfortable,” she wrote of the photographs. “I haven’t been having basement sex with the lights off all these years so you could go show what our belly buttons look like!” But West also felt something “unclench deep inside.” Fat bodies, like hers, might not have to be treated like a secret. What if, she wondered, “I could just decide I was valuable and it would be true?” … [Read more...] about Fat and Happy
CNN “Reliable Sources” host Brian Stelter makes no secret about the fact that he was once fat. You know, before his TV career took off and he started sucking up to Jeff Zucker and declaring himself a leader in responsible news reporting. He grows especially insufferable when GOP presidential contender Donald Trump claims that if he loses, the presidential election will be rigged. Stelter personally can’t have that. But he also can’t help but frame things in the context of food. “If politics is a chocolate chip cookie and media is a brownie, this is really a blondie,” Stelter said on Brooke Baldwin‘s program Monday afternoon, explaining Fox News’ Sean Hannity advising Trump. “…I’ve been thinking about this. …I haven’t had lunch yet, that’s what that’s about.” The backstory: Before Stelter turned 25, he went on a big public diet in which he announced that he intended to lose 25 … [Read more...] about CNN’s Brian Stelter Lets His Inner Fat Kid Out
To put it mildly, Sydney Elaine Leathers has had a weird year. From liposuction so painful she’d rather be fat than ever do it again to getting double D breasts, selling a slice of her vagina, going on Howard Stern and making a porno film, the bombshell disclosure that she was sexting with New York mayoral hopeful Anthony Weiner after he resigned from Congress because of all his lying about all the other phone sex all seems rather blasé. So now what? With another porn film looming on the horizon, Sydney is excited to explore whatever doors the Weiner episode may open for her. And sure, if any other politicians want to sext with her, she says she’ll sign a non-disclosure agreement. Any takers? Of all of Weiner’s sexting partners, Sydney is the most brash and the one cashing in. And she won’t apologize for it. As we reported earlier in the week, she jokes that she wouldn’t mind if Weiner’s penis landed back in her inbox. But that’s not … [Read more...] about The Mirror Questionnaire
