A prisoner at Guantanamo Bay has been sent back to his native Saudi Arabia to serve out the remainder of a 13-year sentence, making him the first detainee to leave the US prison in Cuba since Donald Trump took office. The Pentagon announced the transfer of Ahmed Mohammed al Darbi in a brief statement on Wednesday. He had originally been scheduled to return home as part of a plea deal no later than 20 February. Al Darbi pleaded guilty before a military commission at the detention centre in 2014 to charges stemming from an Al Qaeda attack on a French oil tanker. He is expected to serve out the rest of his sentence, about nine years, in a Saudi rehabilitation program as part of a deal that included extensive testimony against others held at Guantanamo His main lawyer, Ramzi Kassem, said the transfer was the culmination of “16 long and painful years in captivity” by the US at Guantanamo and in Afghanistan, with his children growing up … [Read more...] about US transfers first detainee from Guantanamo Bay under Donald Trump, Pentagon confirms

By AFP SINGAPORE: Donald Trump's handshake with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore on Tuesday marked a historic moment -- the first meeting ever between a sitting US president and the leader of North Korea. The US president's often-awkward handshakes with world leaders have sparked ridicule but many hope the one with Kim -- the culmination of months of dramatic diplomacy -- will lead to durable peace on the Korean peninsula. Here are some other handshakes that shook the world: - The Koreas: Kim Jong Un -Moon Jae-in (2018) On April 27, 2018, as the world held its breath, Kim Jong Un and Moon Jae-in reached across the Military Demarcation Line that divides the two Koreas and shook hands, the result of a remarkable thaw on the peninsula sparked by the Winter Olympics earlier this year. Kim then stepped over the border for a summit with the South Korean president, making him the first leader from Pyongyang to set foot in the South since the Korean War ended in an armistice … [Read more...] about From Nelson Mandela-Raul Castro to Donald Trump-Kim Jong Un, handshakes that shook the world
Register for our free newsletter US president Donald Trump has called upon politicians to “summon the unity” needed to make good on long-standing promises to fix the nation’s crumbling infrastructure and fractured immigration systems in his State of the Union address. “To every citizen watching at home tonight, no matter where you have been, or where you come from, this is your time,” Mr Trump declared. Here, some of the claims from the speech are fact-checked by the Associated Press. Wage gains TRUMP: “After years and years of wage stagnation, we are finally seeing rising wages.” THE FACTS: They are not rising any faster than they have before. Average hourly pay rose 2.5% in 2017, slightly slower than the 2.9% recorded in 2016. Most economists say wages should increase at a faster rate as the unemployment rate drops. The unemployment rate stands at a 17-year low of 4.1%, but that has done little so far to spark rising wages. DONALD Trump has withdrawn the US from the United Nations Human Rights Council as his envoy called it "not worthy of its name". The US UN ambassador, Nikki Haley, slammed the body as "hypocritical and self-serving" and "makes a mockery of human rights". She threatened the US would pull out a year ago unless "essential reforms were achieved" but today said it was clear those calls for change weren't heeded. Making the announcement alongside Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday, she accused the organisation of a "chronic bias against Israel". Haley criticised Russia, China, Cuba and Egypt for thwarting US efforts to reform the council - formed in 2006 to replace the UN's Human Rights Commission. She also hit out at countries which shared US values and encouraged Washington to remain but "were unwilling to seriously challenge the status quo." Citing Venezuela, China, Cuba and Democratic Republic of Congo, Haley said: "Look at the council membership, and you see an appalling … [Read more...] about Donald Trump withdraws US from UN Human Rights Council as envoy blasts ‘chronic bias against Israel’
It seemed for a brief second that Trump had been able to reach a compromise with the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives. The fact that he had to sign off a bill in the Senate that would avert another highly unpopular government shutdown meant he could have blamed the failure to deliver his Mexican border wall on the Democrats and still retained some credibility with his MAGA fans. Because this was never really about a wall or immigration. It was a stunt pulled straight from reality TV to keep ratings high. “Trump’s presidency is the real national emergency,” wrote Representative Ruben Gallego on Twitter, and as well as expressing a sentiment that many an American would agree with, also drew attention to an important fact. There is no universally agreed-upon definition of a national emergency in any part of the US political system. This means that the president has the option to declare one when he or she (well, let’s face it, he) sees fit, … [Read more...] about Opinion: Calling a national emergency would be the most selfish thing Donald Trump has ever done
