A HEALTH worker who used a drill to damage her ex-fiance’s car, superglued his front door lock, and poisoned his plants has escaped jail.Anna Maguire, 56, of Glengorm Avenue, Coleraine in Co Derry, was snapped on CCTV entering her former lover Andy Farrer’s Portrush home – once during the night as he slept – and also in broad daylight while he was at a charity event.A judge told Maguire her actions were “appalling” but because of her clear record, and the fact there had been no repeat offence, he was suspending a five-month sentence for three years.At Coleraine Magistrates Court today, District Judge Liam McNally also ordered Maguire to pay an extra £500 compensation for “anguish and hurt” caused to her ex and set down a three-year restraining order.A previous hearing heard Maguire caused such severe damage to the car it was deemed too dangerous to drive by insurers and had to be “written off”.Mr Farrer claimed at an … [Read more...] about Spurned Irish woman takes DRILL to ex’s car, superglues his locks, poisons his plants… then walks free

A FASCINATING book on the city - dating from the early nineteenth century - has been newly-published on the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) website, offering a rich insight into what it would have been like to live here one hundred and seventy years ago. A New Directory of the City of Londonderry, 1839, paints a vivid portrait of the town just years prior to the Great Famine, when William Lamb was Queen Victoria's Prime Minister and Hugh Fortescue was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.The old tome describes what was once a bustling centre of international commerce.
