Marvel took a bit of an internet ribbing when it touted Avengers: Infinity War as the “most ambitious crossover event in history,” a communing of superheroes and A-list stars with the collective superpower to take cash directly from moviegoers’ wallets. Oodles of it, it turns out: the film is projected to make another $30 million this weekend, adding to its $552 million domestic haul. Another meeting of comic book fan favorites will dethrone the caucus of Marvel mainstays this weekend: Deadpool 2, which introduces antihero Cable (Josh Brolin) as Ryan Reynolds’ frenemy in crime-fighting. This is to be expected, yes, but it is an injustice to another gathering of superheroes taking place this weekend, a convocation of icons the likes of which have never before been assembled on screen. Friends, the movie event of the summer isBook Club. Are we being slightly hyperbolic about this film, in which friends played by Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, and Mary … [Read more...] about ‘Book Club’ Is the Superhero Movie Event of the Summer

For Daniel Levy, it has taken 18 years; a journey driven by his perfectionist nature, his obsession with the finest of details. The Tottenham chairman has overseen the construction of a squad to challenge at the top of the Premier League and the move to a state‑of‑the-art training complex. Now, the centrepiece is in place – the 62,062-capacity stadium, which will officially open against Crystal Palace on Wednesday night. It felt like a time for Levy to exhale on Tuesday morning; even to congratulate himself, however alien that is to him. Then, Mauricio Pochettino followed him into a media briefing and upped the ante. Dramatically so. The manager chose the eve of the stadium’s unveiling to outline his vision for what he called the club’s next chapter, the beginning of their next project. It amounted to a challenge to Levy and everyone else at the club to reset, dig deeper and be smarter. To Pochettino, Spurs must now think and act like an elite club and he … [Read more...] about Pochettino wants big-club vision as Spurs stadium opens new chapter
ROCKVILLE — In 1937, The 400 Club was built on the shores of Pleasant Lake, home to the namesake 400 members who paid just $1 for exclusive membership. Eighty years later, Mike and Mar Dols are carrying on the supper club's historic tradition. The restaurateurs, who also own Coyote Moon Grille and previously owned The Great Blue Heron Restaurant, put a great deal of time and effort into reviving the decades-old building. "It (has been) the biggest challenge of my life," Mike Dols said. "I've had a lot of restaurants in my 45 years (in the business), but it's never been like this. ... The place needed so much work. I never realized the depth of the issues before we started work." Dols said the majority of the work was centered on the kitchen, a fitting use of resources for a restaurant in which the "number one priority is dining." When diners arrive at The 400 Club, they'll be treated to a menu that Dols described as "consistent" with the … [Read more...] about Under new ownership, The 400 Club provides ‘a different kind of wow’
As conversation starts for what wil come next at the top of State Street hill, those who called Chauncey Hill Mall a hangout through the generations recall why a strip mall was so vital to growing up WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Chauncey Hill Mall, with its first stores opened in December 1979 a few blocks from Purdue University, might never have been much to look at. In recent years, one part-owner confessed to a crowd at a public hearing about West Lafayette and Purdue’s $120 million remake of State Street that she was a little embarrassed to crest the hill with friends and tell them that, “Yeah, I do own 50 percent of that.” And Chauncey Hill Mall, now approaching 40, is not exactly what city officials, ready to welcome a more urban downtown setting near campus and along a rebuilt State Street, have in mind, anymore. (“I am sure the mall had its heyday, but the amount of asphalt on that location is just unbearable,” said Nick DeBoer, a West Lafayette … [Read more...] about Bangert: Tales from Chauncey Hill Mall, a hangout for generations near Purdue
