The HCM City Department of Natural Resources and Environment has launched a mobile app providing information related to classification of solid wastes at source. — VNS Photo Viet Nam News HCM CITY — A mobile application to provide people information about solid waste classification at source was unveiled in HCM City on June 21. The app, “Phân loại chất thải rắn tại nguồn” (Solid waste classification at source) has been created by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DONRE) and the Việt Nam Post and Telecommunications Group. The helpful sorting tool offers users helpful tips on how to separate various types of untreated solid wastes through images, videos and text. It also shows the process of solid waste collection, how to categorise the waste based on recycling labels and a list of solid waste types. HCMC to expand solid-waste classification pilot programme

The classification makes collection and treatment of garbage easier, reduces the cost of treatment and enables recycling of many items. According to the city’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment, 7,000-8,000 tonnes of waste are generated daily, and around 75 per cent of this is buried underground instead of being appropriately classified and treated. Nguyễn Toàn Thắng, director of the department, said the classification at source would help recycle 60 per cent of the waste, reducing pollution risks from landfills and treatment costs. Nguyễn Hồng Lĩnh, secretary of the province Party Committee, speaking at a meeting on March 26 to discuss plans to create solid-waste treatment facilities from now through 2020, said categorically the People’s Committee should not issue licences for plants that use outdated technologies. Industrial solid waste transported from other provinces for burying in Bà Rịa- Vũng Tàu should be carefully managed, he said. The People’s Committee should continue to “control pollution” at the Tóc Tiên landfill in Tân Thành District and wastewater leakage from rubbish dumps, he said. The HCM City Department of Natural Resources and Environment is seeking investment for waste treatment facilities to be located in Củ Chi District.– VNA/VNS Photo Xuân Dự HCM CITY – The HCM City Department of Natural Resources and Environment is seeking investment for waste treatment facilities to be located in Củ Chi District. The city treats 8,900 tonnes of solid waste per day, with around 69 per cent buried, according to the department. Every day, it also treats 1,500 tonnes of industrial waste, 374 tonnes of hazardous waste and 22 tonnes of medical waste. At a meeting held yesterday, city officials said they were seeking funds for two waste-to-energy projects for solid waste by 2025 to be located at the Phước Hiệp solid waste treatment complex in Củ Chi District, located 40km from the city.
