Downtown condo development ban may cause monopoly

February 14, 2019 by english.thesaigontimes.vn

Downtown condo development ban may cause monopoly By Le Anh An aerial view of the downtown area of HCMC - PHOTO: THANH HOA HCMC - The HCMC government’s decision to stop licensing new multistorey apartment building projects in Districts 1 and 3 until 2020 could result in a monopoly among the few investors in projects currently under construction, paving the way for them to raise the prices of apartments, according to the HCMC Real Estate Association (HoREA). HCMC currently has more than 8,500 high-end apartments, accounting for 30% of the total, while low-cost ones make up only 24.7%, with nearly 7,000 units. This means that there is an imbalance in HCMC’s housing market. A balanced housing market should have the largest proportion of low-end apartments and the smallest proportion of apartments in the high-end segment. HoREA forecast a shortage of homes for low-income people but an abundant supply of high-end apartments. Investors in luxury apartments will have to … [Read more...] about Downtown condo development ban may cause monopoly

February 15, 2017 by vietnamnews.vn

Herbicides 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and paraquat are officially banned in Việt Nam. — Photo laodong.com.vn Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has issued a diktat prohibiting the use of plant protection products containing paraquat and 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) in Việt Nam. The decision to eliminate the two herbicides from the list of plant protection chemicals was made after scientific evidence showed that the chemicals posed a danger to both humans and the environment, Plant Protection Department said. Paraquat, a chemical weed killer, and 2,4-D, an organic compound, are used to control a broad range of weeds, but leaves cereals, lawn turf, and grasslands relatively unaffected. 2,4-D can be found in numerous commercial lawn herbicide mixtures, and is widely used as a weed killer for cereal crops, pastures, and orchards. Over 1,500 herbicide products contain 2,4-D as an active ingredient. According to the … [Read more...] about Govt bans 2,4-D, paraquat in Việt Nam

Illegal fishing at Linh Đàm Lake in Hà Nội. VNS Photo Đoàn Tùng Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — Along the canals andr lakes in Hà Nội and HCM City, passers-by are used to men gathering in large groups for hours with their fishing rods, patiently waiting for the fish to come. Sometimes, the street corner is crowded with cheerful noise and claps when someone has a big catch. Their fishing occurs day and night despite big warning signs nearby saying fishing is banned. Ngô Thị Yến, a resident of Hà Nội’s Tây Hồ District, said that hundreds of residents around West Lake make a living by catching fish. Some even catch up to ten kilograms of fish every day. Traffic congestion at the Tạ Quang Bửu - Bạch Mai junction in Hà Nội. — VNA/VNS Photo Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — Hà Nội authorities are drawing up plans to set aside additional streets for pedestrians only to “lessen public dependency” on private vehicles, especially motorbikes, the head of the municipal department of transportation, Vũ Văn Viện, said at a June 21 workshop on traffic safety. The event was organised by the National Traffic Safety Committee and South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Propelled by the success of the walking streets around Hoàn Kiếm Lake, considered the heart of the capital city,  replication of this model is just one of an array of measures that city authorities are considering in an ambitious attempt to stop the use of motorbikes altogether. According to the transport director, some countries in the region implemented a five to ten-year roadmap to purge inner cities of the (hitherto) ubiquitous presence of motorbikes.
