The sea cable route is nearly 8.9 kilometres long, thought to be the longest in the world, with one end in An Thới Town and the other in Hòn Thơm Island, the largest in the An Thới island cluster to the south in Phú Quốc. The maximum speed of the cable car system can reach 8.5 metre per second so the total time from the start to the final station is just 15 minutes. The system has 69 cars capable of carrying 30 passengers each and uses modern three-rope cable car technology. This is part of the department’s draft plan to improve parking lots, bus stations and bus interchanges by 2030 with a view to 2050. Plans have been submitted to the municipal People’s Committee for approval. Under the draft, the four bus stations would still be places to pick up and drop off passengers but they would be gradually transformed into parking lots. The accident happened at about 9am, at the North-South railway between Phú Hiệp Station and Đông Tác Station of Hòa Hiệp Bắc Commune, Đông Hòa District. The driver of the car was a local man, Mai Văn Toàn. According to witnesses, the car was driven across an intersection between railway and road while the train was running, despite the crossing being equipped with signal lights and an automatic bell. Consequently, the South-North route’s SNQ2 train crashed directly into the car, dragging it about 5m. These cars are equipped with smart TVs and WiFi, and passengers are served with snacks, drinks and wet wipes free of charge. The bus route, which took two years of work and total investment of US$2.9 million, will help boost the city’s internal bus services by offering public car parking areas, bus stops and shuttle bus routes connecting residential quarters and public destinations. The new routes are one of the projects under the capital city’s transport scheme until 2030 with a vision towards 2050, which has been approved by Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc. The investment capital will be disbursed among different periods. The 2017-20 period will need some $7.5 billion and the 2021-25 period will need some $7.6 billion. More than $3.5 billion will be spent on the 2026-30 period and over $21.3 billion will be spent on the period after 2031.
