Trunk and root borers have damaged cashew trees in Bình Phước Province’s Bù Gia Mập District. – VNA/VNS Photo Viet Nam News HCM CITY – Bình Phước Province’s agricultural officials are helping cashew farmers learn new cultivation techniques because of losses incurred in recent years due to pests and inclement weather. The southeastern province is the country’s largest producer of cashews. The local authorities have provided farmer Điểu Choi, who has a 2ha cashew orchard in Bù Gia Mập District’s Phú Nghĩa Commune, pesticides and fertilisers to improve his yield. In the last harvest season, he had a poor yield of 700 kilos of cashew. Choi has learned how to fertilise cashew trees properly, and identify pests and spray pesticides. “I’m following the instructions and hope I’ll have a better yield this year,” he said. Choi’s orchard serves as a model for other agricultural officials in the commune. Consumers favouring natural over artificial food
Consumers prefer green vegettable at supermarket. — Photo zing.vn by Khanh Duong HA NOI (VNS) — Every weekend, 21-year-old Nguyen Viet Hung, a senior from Ha Noi-based University of Science and Technology, visits his hometown in the northern province of Hung Yen. What he receives is the joy of gathering with family, and a package full of fresh food. Vegetables, beef, chicken, sausages, pork pies, even dry onions and garlic are carefully selected by his mother from his family farm. Hung does not have to go to the market to buy food. Hung started to worry about the origins of the food he bought at the market in the city four years ago. "When I just entered university, I often bought vegetables and meat at a market near my rented room. These vegetables look suspiciously fresh. My mother said only vegetables with pesticides look very fresh like this." Not until a day when Hung suffered from a terrible stomachache did he realise that he really needed to change his eating … [Read more...] about Consumers favouring natural over artificial food
Organic farmers unable to make a clean break
Nguyễn Văn Hồng and the unharvested morning glory.—VNA/VNS Photo Thu Vân Viet Nam News The morning glory plants stood unharvested. Considering how popular a green vegetable this is across the length and breadth of Viet Nam, it was strange that farmer Nguyễn Mạnh Hồng could not be bothered to cut and sell them. But Hồng is a disheartened man these days. It has been a year since he started growing clean vegetables in his 2,600 square-metre net house in Ha Noi’s Yên Mỹ Commune, Thanh Trì District. When Hồng decided to invest more than VNĐ3 billion (US$130,000) in the net house along with other equipment, he hoped that the increase in demand for safe, organic products would deliver handsome returns. But he has been brought down to earth by a combination of factors that defy simplistic analysis. While there is demand for organic vegetables from increasingly health conscious customers, as also increasing recognition of the environmental benefits of organic farming, … [Read more...] about Organic farmers unable to make a clean break

Reflecting on Gutenberg’s 100th Release
Gutenberg 10.0 released this week, February 17, 2021, marking the 100th release of the Gutenberg plugin; the 100th release of a journey that started more than four years ago when Matt announced the project at WordCamp US 2016. Where We Started The past four years have not always been an easy journey. Shipping something this impactful is not easy, and there was precedent for keeping the editor as it was: WordPress had already tried to replace TinyMCE a couple of times already. What would be different this time around? The worry was “not much” and initially, very few people actively joined the project. Six months later came WordCamp Europe 2017 and the first release of the plugin. The editor was nowhere close to being usable, but it “clicked” for some. The reactions to the presentation were hopeful, but afterward, there was a lot of pushback. Gutenberg was (and is) an audacious project. With a project this big it attracted a lot of attention, and it became difficult to discern … [Read more...] about Reflecting on Gutenberg’s 100th Release

Vietnamese agriculture, but not as you know it
Hoà’s pigs enjoy their natural habitat. - VNS Photo Khoa Thư Viet Nam News By Khoa Thư QUẢNG TRỊ - A herd of pigs runs up a high hill, in front of them, a vast farm spreads out, reaching the horizon. The image may be strange for most Vietnamese people, with the mindset that domestic livestock are usually kept in cages. Nguyễn Thị Hoà’s farm in Triệu Thượng Commune, Quảng Trị Province, offers pigs precious freedom that their fellow animals rarely enjoy. “We are the first and also the only farm in the whole area that rears pigs in their natural habitat,” Hoà said. “They find and eat whatever they like. They run as far as they can, to every corner of this 10 ha farm. Our pork, therefore, has distinct characteristics of colour, taste and balanced fat ratio that normal farms cannot offer,” she added. Pork, however, is not the only specialty offered by Hoà. Up to 1,500 chickens are also farmed on the space. Instead of simply pouring instant pre-mixed food out of bags, … [Read more...] about Vietnamese agriculture, but not as you know it
