Five days before a Maryland couple were found dead inside their Dominican Republic hotel room, a woman from Pennsylvania vacationing with her husband at the same La Romana resort suddenly collapsed and died. Miranda Schaup-Werner, 41, a psychotherapist from Allentown, passed away on May 25 at the all-inclusive Bahia Principe Hotel after getting a drink from the mini-bar. The woman and her husband, Dan Werner, had traveled to the popular tourist destination in the Caribbean to celebrate their ninth wedding anniversary. An autopsy performed by local authorities determined the cause of death to be respiratory failure and pulmonary edema caused by fluid in the lungs. Delta Air Lines has announced that it will be allowing passengers to re-book or cancel their flights to the Dominican Republic without charge in light of a string of US tourists mysteriously falling ill or dying in the country.
