Both as candidate and president, Donald Trump has made a lot of promises about the wall he wants to build along the U.S.-Mexico border. "Build the wall! Build the wall!" is still chanted with passion at his rallies, a battle cry for Trump supporters and a flagship policy upon which he was elected in 2016. Trump's 2020 re-election campaign is up and running, having already raised $129 million. And he's citing the border wall as a presidential success of his first term. In the "promises kept" section of his campaign website, listed under "achievements," are two claims about the wall, which Trump argues is necessary for border security. The first is this: "President Trump called on Congress to fully fund a wall along the southern border." And the second, this: "The White House negotiated $1.6 billion in border wall funding." But to what extent are those two claims true? And can they be considered "promises kept"? The graphic below, provided by Statista, illustrates the progress made on … [Read more...] about Donald Trump’s 2020 Campaign Claims President Kept His Border Wall Promises—but Has He?

Tidings of comfort, joy, and a partial government shutdown in Washington. Photo: Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call,Inc. Funding for nine Cabinet departments and assorted federal agencies runs out on December 21, next Friday. If nothing is done and big chunks of the federal government shut down, it will create some holiday misery for selected federal employees and people who rely on them, and won’t be at all popular. Yet nothing much is happening to head it off, as Politico reports: The House and Senate left town Thursday with no strategy to avert a partial government shutdown next week, putting Congress on the brink of an intractable conflict that could drag out through New Year’s Day — furloughing hundreds of thousands of workers and costing taxpayers millions. Everybody agrees this impasse only occurred because the president lost his temper during a photo op with Democratic leaders earlier this week and vowed to shut down the government if his demands for border wall … [Read more...] about Government Drifts Toward Xmas Shutdown After Trump Blows Up Talks
Carlos Gregorio Hernandez Vasquez, a 16-year-old Guatemalan migrant, was seriously ill when immigration agents put him in a small South Texas holding cell with another sick boy on the afternoon of May 19. A few hours earlier, a nurse practitioner at the Border Patrol’s dangerously overcrowded processing center in McAllen had diagnosed him with the flu and measured his fever at 103 degrees. She said that he should be checked again in two hours and taken to the emergency room if his condition worsened. None of that happened. Worried that Carlos might infect other migrants in the teeming McAllen facility, officials moved him to a cell for quarantine at a Border Patrol station in nearby Weslaco. By the next morning, he was dead. In a press release that day, Customs and Border Protection’s acting commissioner at the time, John Sanders, called Carlos’ death a “tragic loss.” The agency said that an agent had found Carlos “unresponsive” after checking … [Read more...] about Inside the Cell Where a Sick 16-Year-Old Boy Died in Border Patrol Care
A plan from 2020 Democrats to provide free, American taxpayer-funded health care to all illegal aliens living in the United States would cost up to $23 billion a year, a new study finds. In June, the majority of 2020 Democrats running for president — including Joe Biden, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) — endorsed a plan that would force American taxpayers to provide free health care to all 11 to 22 million illegal aliens in the U.S. and anyone else who crosses the southern border. The latest study by Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) researchers reveals that providing health care to all illegal aliens would cost American taxpayers up to $23 billion a year should every illegal alien enroll. This total includes at least 2.5 million low-income illegal aliens and their children who would cost almost $13 billion a year, alone, to be given health care. (Center for Immigration Studies) Even if only about five million illegal aliens enroll in federal … [Read more...] about Study: Health Care for Illegal Aliens Would Cost America $23 Billion a Year
Top story: ‘Scandalously inhumane and unjustifiable’ Good morning. It’s Warren Murray with the essential news of the morning. A snapshot by the Guardian of 200 migrants held in seven British detention centres found more than half were suicidal, seriously ill or victims of torture, with 84% not told when they would be deported. Almost half the detainees had not committed a crime but had been detained for an average of four months. The situation appears to contravene UN human rights guidance that immigration detention should be a last resort. The government detains just over 25,000 people every year pending deportation, at an annual cost of £108m. But fewer than 50% of those held in removal centres actually end up being deported, and most have lived in the UK for five years or more. A handful of private firms are paid hundreds of millions of dollars to run the detention centres, raking in up to 30% profit. The UK is the only European country without a limit on how … [Read more...] about Thursday briefing: Migrants languish in costly detention
Trump continues to blame Californians for their own burning troubles. Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images The 2018 wildfire season in California was the worst in living memory, consuming nearly 2 million acres of land, killing 87 people, destroying tens of thousands of homes, requiring an estimated $3 billion in public expenditures for debris removal, and costing insurance companies over $9 billion in payments. Unbelievable efforts by firefighters, and then the annual winter rains, have finally put out the fires. So the timing of this morning’s presidential tweet is very, very strange: This is actually a revised tweet; the first version spelled Forest as “Forrest.” It says a lot about Trump’s focus on the subject that he bothered to make a correction. It’s hardly a new thought from Trump: He tweeted something very similar in November when the lethal Camp Fire in Northern California was at its peak: This is at best an insanely simplistic explanation of a … [Read more...] about Trump Threatens Literal Scorched-Earth Policy to Punish California
