Visa waiver deals with Chile, France poised to take effect (02-06-2005) HA NOI — Viet Nam’s agreements with Chile and France to mutually waive visas for diplomatic passport-holders are set to take effect soon. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the agreement with Chile, signed last year, will come into effect on June 25. Under this agreement, citizens of the two countries with valid diplomatic or official passports will not need entry, exit or transit visas and can temporarily reside in the other country for 60 days. Officials prosecuted in rice deal (26-07-2005) NINH THUAN — The Ninh Thuan People’s Procuracy has decided to prosecute five officials from the provincial cereal-processing plant for their alleged involvement in the supply of poor-quality rice to local drought-stricken residents. The accused include the plant’s former director Hoang Trang Thanh, former deputy director Diep Ai Nhat, and former deputy chief of the plant’s trade department Chau Kien Cuong. The people’s procuracy claimed that Cuong had recommended the purchase of 1,000kg of rice by the plant for local drought-stricken residents, despite knowing that some of the rice was of poor quality and mouldy. For this action, Cuong stands accused of intentionally contravening State regulations on economic management, with serious consequences, while the other officials are accused of irresponsibility. The VN-Index of the Hochiminh Stock Exchange shed a hefty 24.8 points, or 2.5%, against the previous day to close at 965.47. Market breadth on the southern exchange was negative with 220 stocks losing and 98 others gaining. Trade remained positive, though, as volume dropped 14% versus Wednesday at 223.6 million shares and value increased 5% at VND5.3 trillion. Nine out of the top 10 stocks lost. Property giant VIC and its affiliates made the most negative contribution to the VN-Index. Keelty said his agency was the first law enforcement body from a developed country to sign such agreements with Vietnamese police. According to a recently signed regulation, the People’s Supreme Procuracy will work with the Central Committee of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front, the People’s Aspirations Board of the National Assembly and the Home Affairs Department of the Communist Party’s Central Committee to manage and solve all judicial complaints. The regulation was signed yesterday under the supervision of Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong.
