Viet Nam News HCM CITY — Doctors at Bình Dân Hospital in HCM City performed surgery to remove a 4-kilo tumour in the abdomen of a 64-year-old woman late last month, the hospital said in a press release yesterday. The surgery prevented the tumour from growing and blocking other organs, which could lead to bleeding and be life-threatening. The woman from the city’s Củ Chi Distric had symptoms of fatigue and difficulties in digestion. A CAT scan at her local hospital showed that she had a large tumor 20 centimetres in diameter. The patient was transferred to Bình Dân Hospital for further examination and treatment late last month. Doctors said she had a gastrointestinal stromal tumour, which needed immediate surgery. The elderly man is the oldest kidney transplant patient in the hospital and in Việt Nam, so far. Kidney functions of patient Đào Ngọc V., from the southern province of Đồng Nai, returned to normal two weeks following the transplant. He was discharged from the hospital in stable heath, head of the hospital’s Kidney and Transplantation Immunisation Department Tạ Phương Dung said. The patient faced a high risk of fatality following the kidney failure at a late stage. He had already received peritoneal dialysis treatment for more than a year. HCM CITY — Application of advanced mini techniques can reduce post-operative care and pain compared to traditional methods, doctors said at Bình Dân Hospital’s biennial conference held in HCM City last Saturday. Laparoscopic surgery is used in appendectomy, inguinal hernia repair, and for other medical problems in Việt Nam. Dr Nguyễn Phúc Cẩm Hòang of Bình Dân Hospital said that the Urology B Ward last year used the latest advanced endoscopic procedure, called mini percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), to remove kidney stones from six patients. According to the European Association of Urology’s treatment guidelines updated in 2014, PCNL is recommended as the therapy of choice for large renal calculi for certain conditions. The PCNL therapy, however, causes significant complications such as blood loss, postoperative pain and potential renal damage because of the large instrument. HCM CITY — HCM City authorities sought the opinion of official agencies on a draft regulation that calls for considering popular opinion before passing important policies concerned with people’s rights and responsibilities at a meeting on Thursday.
