Crazy Ex-Girlfriend I’m Not the Person I Used to Be Season 4 Episode 8 Editor’s Rating 4 stars **** «Previous Next» Photo: Robert Voets/The CW It’s the episode we’ve all been waiting for: the introduction of New Greg. With Santino Fontana off doing his best Dustin Hoffman, Rachel Bloom’s college chum Skylar Astin has taken on the role of everyone’s favorite sarcastic barkeep — and he’ll be back for the rest of the series (…of holidays … that concludes with Valentine’s Day). Greg’s sudden return to West Covina is thanks to his and Josh’s 10-year high school reunion, which is actually a 12-year reunion because incompetent class president Hector couldn’t get it together sooner. In addition to Josh, Greg, and Hector, the Cov’s class of 2006 also includes Valencia, WhiJo, Father Brah, and George (in the most inspired use yet of the “no one remembers George” gag). … [Read more...] about Recap: Greg Party
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend I Need Some Balance Season 4 Episode 9 Editor’s Rating 5 stars ***** «Previous Next» Photo: Robert Voets/The CW Even by the standards of a show that thrives on fanservice, this episode of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is really for the heads. Longtime viewers know that Rebecca despises Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats. So a musical parody was inevitable, but the show ups the stakes by making it an episode-long one, with each, uh, pussy as a different manifestation of Rebecca’s downstairs. This is peak Rachel Bloom, and all I can do is look on in stunned amazement that we live in the kind of world that will air it at 9 p.m. on network television. The episode, written by Elisabeth Kiernan Averick, does a good job letting its essential weirdness shine without overcomplicating things. Unlike Cats itself (as Rebecca bitterly notes), it has a clear, simple plot arc: Rebecca needs to get laid. Still fantasizing about her threesome of exes, … [Read more...] about Recap: Pussyfooting
This side dish of spicy, bubbly, funky pickled vegetables is such a staple in Korea that no meal is considered complete without it—and recently, kimchi has found its way into burgers, pasta, grilled cheese, and even tacos. In this episode, we trace the behind-the-scenes story of the “kimchi diplomacy” that turned Korea’s favorite fermented cabbage into an international food trend. And then, because we’re Gastropod, we take part in our very own cutting-edge science experiment to understand one of kimchi science’s most mysterious questions: Where do the microbes that transform the sugars in cabbage into such tangy, savory flavors actually come from? Is it our hands? The soil? Or could the secret to all that deliciousness actually lie in the stomachs of beetles and bugs? Listen in this episode for kimchi secrets, kimchi explosions, and a little bit of kimchi K-pop, too.“Koreans traditionally have kimchi at all three meals: breakfast, lunch, and … [Read more...] about The Resounding Triumph of Kimchi Diplomacy

She was still a few years out from the string of personal problems and legal skirmishes that would derail her red-hot career in a way that she's, sadly, never managed to fully recover from. Feet firmly planted in the center of the zeitgeist and could do anything she wanted as her next move.Naturally, it was time to record an album. Now, the move wasn't without precedent.
