On January 1, Katherine and her friends, who are students from the U.S., rode from the ancient town of Hoi An to Cua Dai beach, a must-see place in Quang Nam Province. But the beach was not what they had imagined. It was full of sandbags used to mitigate coastal erosion. They parked their bikes near coconut trees, sat on their canvas, and looked out to the sea. “Hoi An is so peaceful. The sea is breathtaking. But what a pity! The number of Chinese tourists in the country has dropped for two months in a row since December 2018 – PHOTO: DAO LOAN HCMC – The local tourism industry set a record in the number of international tourists last month, with over 1.5 million arrivals. However, arivals from China continue a downward spiral during the given month for the second consecutive time. Data issued by the General Statistics Office (GSO) show that over 370,000 Chinese tourists visited Vietnam last month, down some 10% year-on-year. In December last year, the local tourism industry had seen a 2% decrease in the number of tourists from this major source market.
