Investment bank Wedbush says that the recent Apple stock sell-off creates a "golden buying opportunity" for investors, and predicts that Apple still has a $3 trillion valuation on the horizon. In a note to investors seen by AppleInsider , lead Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives says the bank has added Apple to its "Best Ideas List." He says that, in the wake of a historic December quarter for Apple, Wall Street has been expecting modest cuts to 2021 iPhone forecasts. Despite that, the analyst says recent checks in Asia are continuing to come in bullish. He continues to predict that Apple could ship upwards of 230 million iPhone units during the year. That number is higher than the current Wall Street consensus of 220 million units. Based on the current trajectory, Ives says that Apple could sell north of 240 million units — with an "eye popping" 250 million units possibly in the cards. He adds that demand in China still looks strong coming out of the Chinese New Year. … [Read more...] about Recent Apple sell-off a ‘golden buying opportunity,’ analyst says

iPhone demand weakness just ‘noise,’ outlook remains strong, analyst says
Investment bank Morgan Stanley calls recent reports of weaker iPhone demand "supply chain noise," and sees the AAPL pullback as a buying opportunity for investors. In a note to investors seen by AppleInsider , analyst Katy Huberty says she agrees with reports of iPhone 12 mini weakness, but adds that the overall demand environment remains positive for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro lineup. For one, she cites reports that Apple is cutting iPhone production to 75 million units in the first half of 2021. Although Huberty admits this has contributed to recent AAPL underperformance, she says the news is "noise rather than anything that impacts the fundamental outlook." A recent Morgan Stanley check indicated that there's between three million and five million units of total iPhone build upside risk for the first half of 2021. That's because the bank's research indicates that build orders for specific iPhone 12 and iPhone 11 models are being revised up, not … [Read more...] about iPhone demand weakness just ‘noise,’ outlook remains strong, analyst says

Morgan Stanley has raised its AAPL price target to $164 on blockbuster Apple December quarter results, and said that products like the iPhone could see continued strength in the second quarter. In a note to investors seen by AppleInsider , Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty said that some of the highlights of Apple's Q1 2021 earnings report were "faster iPhone share gains, installed base growth, and services monetization." Those factors, along with a refreshed product lineup and a continued remote education and learning environment, hint at strong double-digit growth over the next several quarters, Huberty said. Other key metrics support an overall faster growth outlook in the long term. They include an acceleration in Apple's installed base growth — from 7% to 10% — and services monetization, as well as a recovery in China. The analyst adds that Apple's gross margin of 39.8% was 160 basis points higher than she modeled. US declassifies war-era ‘Pentagon Papers’
HA NOI — The US government on Thursday announced that it would declassify the famed "Pentagon Papers" relating to its war with Viet Nam. The papers will be accessible from next month at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library in Yorba Linda, California. Declassification came 40 years after the leakage of the top secret papers which resulted in massive waves of protest against the war in 1971. Officially titled "United States-Viet Nam Relations, 1945-1967: A Study Prepared by the Department of Defense," the report detailed US political and military involvement in Viet Nam from 1945 to 1967. It revealed a greater level of US military involvement in Viet Nam than had been officially made public. The papers, first published on the front page of the New York Times in 1971, created a major scandal and were deemed instrumental in the decision by then-president Lyndon Johnson to not stand for re-election. The Times received the document from Daniel Ellsberg, a military analyst … [Read more...] about US declassifies war-era ‘Pentagon Papers’

ASEAN’s principle hampers co-operation in non-traditional security challenges
HÀ NỘI — ASEAN’s stringent principle of non-interference in other members’ internal business has hindered cooperation efforts to tackle non-traditional security issues in the region, experts said yesterday. Against the backdrop of the simmering military tensions in the East Sea (South China Sea) that involve nearly half of the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations’ members, the regional bloc also faced a number of non-traditional security challenges ranging from drug trafficking, migration, infectious diseases, piracy and international terrorism. These issues were first addressed as internal matters in each country, said political analyst Nghiêm Tuấn Hùng from Việt Nam’s Institute of World Economics and Politics at a two-day conference on the issue jointly held yesterday by the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences and Germany’s Konrad Adenauer Stiftung. “It was not until the economic crisis in 1997, followed by the 2003 SARS and the Avian flu epidemics, did ASEAN countries … [Read more...] about ASEAN’s principle hampers co-operation in non-traditional security challenges
