On the evening of Friday, December 5th, 1980, John Lennon spoke to Rolling Stone editor Jonathan Cott for more than nine hours at his apartment on New York’s Upper West Side and at the Record Plant recording studio. Three nights later, Lennon would be murdered as he was returning home from a mixing session. The interview had originally been scheduled to run as the cover story of the first issue of 1981, but after Lennon’s killing, Cott instead wrote an obituary for Lennon and ended up using very little from their conversations. In fact, he never even fully transcribed his tape. On the 30th anniversary of Lennon’s death, we present, for the first time, the full text of Lennon’s last major print interview: the joyous, outrageously funny, inspiring, fearless and subversive conversation Lennon shared with us that night, as he was preparing to jump back into the limelight after five years of private life with Yoko and their young son, Sean. “Welcome to the … [Read more...] about John Lennon: The Last Interview

John Legend and Rashad Robinson: End money bail now
John Legend is a singer, songwriter, actor and activist. Rashad Robinson is executive director of Color Of Change, America's largest online racial justice organization. The views expressed in this commentary are solely those of the authors. (CNN)No one should have to stay in jail because they lack the money to buy their freedom. Yet every night, according to the Justice Department's statistics, nearly 450,000 people who have not been convicted of a crime sit in jail, a large number trapped there simply because they don't have enough money to post bail. John Legend Rashad Robinson For many, even a relatively modest bail amount is out of reach. Moreover, research shows that on average, black people are assigned higher bail amounts than other defendants arrested for the same offenses. Simply put, it is wrong to be forced by poverty to face an extensive stay in jail while awaiting a court date -- separated from children, family and home, and running the risk of losing … [Read more...] about John Legend and Rashad Robinson: End money bail now
Judge orders single court for pretrial in PG&E fire lawsuits
In a setback for Pacific Gas and Electric Co., a judge has ordered pretrial proceedings to be held in a single court, preferably in San Francisco, for more than 50 lawsuits accusing the utility of causing the Wine Country wildfires. PG&E had sought to divide the proceedings among courts in five counties where the fires broke out, a move that might have improved the company’s chances of getting some of the suits dismissed before trial. But San Francisco Superior Court Judge Curtis Karnow ruled late Thursday that the cases should be coordinated in one court, at the initial stages, because they have many things in common. Each lawsuit blames deaths, injuries and property losses from one of the fires on “PG&E’s alleged lax maintenance and failure to prepare for a foreseeable weather event,” Karnow said. State investigators have not determined the cause of the October fires and have not set a date for announcing a cause. Karnow said that although specific … [Read more...] about Judge orders single court for pretrial in PG&E fire lawsuits
SF asks judge to toss NRA lawsuit over ‘terrorist’ designation
San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera hit back against the National Rifle Association on Thursday, asking a federal judge to toss out the lawsuit the pro-gun group filed against the city last month that accused the Board of Supervisors of violating its First Amendment rights. The NRA’s lawsuit came less than a week after the Board of Supervisors passed a resolution labeling the group as a “domestic terrorist organization” for its efforts to block gun reform legislation. Supervisor Catherine Stefani brought the legislation to the board two days after the deadly shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. In asking the court to dismiss the suit, Herrera’s office argues that the board’s action — a nonbinding resolution — represents an expression of a policy view and not a mandate to take any action. The NRA claimed in its lawsuit that the resolution would result in a blacklisting of the organization and anyone affiliated with it, potentially … [Read more...] about SF asks judge to toss NRA lawsuit over ‘terrorist’ designation
