REUTERS/Brendan McDermid (Reuters) - Walt Disney Co’s Disney+ has been downloaded 22 million times on mobile devices since the launch of the streaming service in November, according to a report by research firm Apptopia. Disney had earlier said its new service had witnessed “extraordinary consumer demand” on the day of the launch, reaching 10 million sign-ups. The company now serves about 41.5 million viewers in the United States, including subscribers for its other streaming businesses, Hulu and ESPN+, compared with about 61 million for industry leader Netflix Inc. Apptopia said Disney+ competitors, including Netflix and Amazon.com Inc’s Prime Video, remain largely unaffected in terms of their performance during the same period. Sinclair to purchase 21 regional sports networks from Disney
New York (CNN Business)Sinclair Broadcast Group will purchase 21 regional sports networks from the Walt Disney Company for $9.6 billion, the two companies announced Friday. The deal values the networks at $10.6 billion, after adjusting for minority equity interests. The move bolsters Sinclair (SBGI), which operates one of the largest networks of local television stations in the country. Sinclair has drawn criticism for pushing a conservative political worldview in its newscasts and programming decisions. Sinclair previously tried to acquire Tribune Media, but the deal was ultimately called off after it was scrutinized by regulators. Tribune then sued Sinclair, contending the company was "unnecessarily aggressive" during negotiations with the Department of Justice and Federal Communications Commission. Disney (DIS) had to sell the regional sports networks under an agreement it struck with the Department of Justice that allowed the media conglomerate to proceed with its purchase of 21st … [Read more...] about Sinclair to purchase 21 regional sports networks from Disney
Disney Loses Early Effort To Stop Pay Inequity & Gender Discrimination Suit From Moving Forward
Christmas might not feel so merry for the Walt Disney Company this year after a hearing this morning on the potential class action pay equity lawsuit from 10 female employees of the House of Mouse did not go to a happy place for the Bob Iger-run company. With LaRonda Rasmussen and seven more of the probable plaintiffs in the otherwise empty DTLA courtroom of Judge Daniel Buckley today, the simmering and potentially multi-million dollar matter survived the legal shiv of the entertainment giant to cut it up and knock it out in one go. While class action certification has not yet been granted by the courts, the next move Disney dreads is lot more likely to become a fact now that company’s desired demurrer and perhaps its motion to strike has been taken out of the equation. The Definitive Ranking Of Walt Disney Animation Studios Films
The Disney movie closest to your heart is probably the one you saw at just the right age and rewatched on a parent-tormenting loop. Trying to objectively critique these movies can be a challenge. How do you assess their quality without taking nostalgia into account? So, to embark on the Herculean task of ranking every Disney Animation Studios film — not movies put out by DisneyToon (A Goofy Movie), classic coproductions (Mary Poppins), or more contemporary collaborations (anything by Pixar) — I rewatched all 57 of these movies and developed a scoring system based on plot, characters, music, animation, and influence. The results are, of course, tempered by personal bias, but I did my best to look at the big picture. If nothing else, hopefully we can agree on what makes the best of Disney so timeless and exceptional: strong stories with gorgeous visuals, stirring music, and that inexplicable quality we so often call "heart." Now, without further ado, here is my ranking of all … [Read more...] about The Definitive Ranking Of Walt Disney Animation Studios Films
Video Shows All Of Disney’s Gay Storylines And Characters
The Disney Channel made headlines this week by airing an episode of its hit show Andi Mack in which one of the main characters, a 13-year-old boy named Cyrus (pictured above), comes out as gay. As the video below shows, Disney has been consistently incorporating homosexual themes and characters into their brand of children’s entertainment for some time now: According to the clip, the Disney Channel sit-com Good Luck Charlie debuted its first lesbian characters back in January 2014. In February 2016 Disney confirmed that Bucky and Pronk from the movie Zootopia are the first openly gay characters in a Disney film. That movie went on to make over a billion dollars at the box office. Disney went on to subtly air its first gay kiss in the background scenes of a popular cartoon show called Star vs. The Forces of Evil in February 2017. In March 2017, LeFou from Beauty and the Beast became the first openly gay character in a live-action Disney film. In June 2017, Disney debuted its first … [Read more...] about Video Shows All Of Disney’s Gay Storylines And Characters
Disney Will Open Star Wars Lands At Its Theme Parks
ANAHEIM, California — Star Wars is about to invade Disney's theme parks in a massive way. At the biannual D23 Expo on Saturday, Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger announced that the company is building two 14-acre expansions to its theme parks that will bring the Star Wars universe to life. One will live at Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park in Orlando, Florida, and the other will reside within the Disneyland park in Anaheim, California. The news, which marks Disney's largest single theme-park expansion in its history, has been anticipated practically from the moment Disney announced in Oct. 2012 that it was purchasing Star Wars parent company Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion — something Iger acknowledged at the outset of his announcement during the D23 Expo."We were excited about making more Star Wars films, obviously," he said. "But we were also excited about bringing Star Wars to just about every corner of the Walt Disney Company. We wanted the great stories and characters to … [Read more...] about Disney Will Open Star Wars Lands At Its Theme Parks
