German animal shelters halt Christmas and New Year adoptions
A pet for Christmas? Certainly not in Germany, if the country's largest animal shelters have anything to say about it. From around December 15 anyone turning up to shelters in major cities such as Berlin, Hanover or Bremen to adopt will be turned away and asked to return in January. "The temporary stop is there so that animals do not end up under the Christmas tree, because animals simply are not presents," Arvid Possekel, from the Hanover Animal Shelter, told DW. "Ideally they become members of the family and you just don't give family members as presents." Already abandoned on Christmas Eve Many animal shelters opted for the temporary adoption ban out of necessity, says Gabriele Schwab of the Bremen Animal Shelter. The Second Coming of George Michael
The singer’s face is barely visible in the inky darkness of the vocal booth, but the voice that fills the adjacent control room at SARM West Studios in London is very familiar. The song is one of irony and loss — “Ma ma ma babe/Look at your hands/You’ve got two fat children and a drunken man/Betcha don’t like your life/Betcha don’t like it.” There is, however, an unmistakable virile quality to the singer’s emphatic delivery, a sensual self-confidence that meshes perfectly with the taut erotic bounce of the guitars underneath. His occasional bursts of lusty falsetto — “Whooo!” — are also a dead giveaway. “Ma ma ma babe,” he continues, leaning harder into the song’s heartbreak scenario. “Look at your hands/You should have been my woman when you had the chance/Betcha don’t like your life/Betcha don’t like it/Betcha don’t like your life now.” Then the voice in … [Read more...] about The Second Coming of George Michael
John Lennon: The Last Interview
On the evening of Friday, December 5th, 1980, John Lennon spoke to Rolling Stone editor Jonathan Cott for more than nine hours at his apartment on New York’s Upper West Side and at the Record Plant recording studio. Three nights later, Lennon would be murdered as he was returning home from a mixing session. The interview had originally been scheduled to run as the cover story of the first issue of 1981, but after Lennon’s killing, Cott instead wrote an obituary for Lennon and ended up using very little from their conversations. In fact, he never even fully transcribed his tape. On the 30th anniversary of Lennon’s death, we present, for the first time, the full text of Lennon’s last major print interview: the joyous, outrageously funny, inspiring, fearless and subversive conversation Lennon shared with us that night, as he was preparing to jump back into the limelight after five years of private life with Yoko and their young son, Sean. “Welcome to the … [Read more...] about John Lennon: The Last Interview
