North Korea launched its first intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on the Fourth of July 2017, praising it as "a gift for the American bastards." This year, however, the traditional U.S. foe has opted to recognize the holiday more positively, in light of a historical warming of relations between the two nations. The official Korean Central News Agency today published an article in memory of the signing of the July 4 South-North Joint Communiqué in 1972. The document was the first to be signed by Communist-backed North Korea and Western-backed South Korea since they were split by the Soviet Union and the U.S. after World War II and went to war in the early 1950s. In the joint statement, then-North Korean supreme leader Kim Il Sung and South Korean KCIA Director Lee Hu-rak laid out three principles for the eventual reunification of the two Koreas: independence, peace and national unity. North Korea's state-run media marked the occasion this year with overwhelming praise. … [Read more...] about North Korea Celebrates Fourth of July 2018 with Peace, Last Year It Launched ICBM ‘Gift’ for ‘American Bastards’

French-Swedish photographer and artistic director Jean-Claude Arnault was sentenced to two years in prison for raping a woman in 2011. Arnault's connections to the Swedish Academy, the body that funds the Nobel Prize for Literature, has sent the organization reeling and led to the first cancellation of the literature prize in over 60 years. In November 2017, Arnault was accused of assaulting at least 18 women, including a claim backed by three witnesses that he groped Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria at an Academy event in 2006. He was charged with two counts of rape, after several charges had to be dropped due to insufficient evidence or the statute of limitations having lapsed. While neither MGM and Sony studios nor the British Board of Film Classification have yet released an official running time for Sam Mendes’s second turn in the 007 director’s chair, Vue lists the film as 160 minutes long, while Empire Cinemas says it is 155 minutes, excluding trailers and adverts. The previous longest James Bond movie was 2006’s Casino Royale at 144 minutes, according to the BBFC. Next longest are 2012’s Skyfall, at just under 143 minutes, and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, at 136 minutes, though IMDb lists George Lazenby’s only turn as 007 at 142 minutes. Generally, the Bond films have got longer over time, with 1962’s series opener Dr No running just 105 minutes and few of the early Sean Connery efforts breaking two hours. One exception is 2008’s poorly reviewed Quantum of Solace, billed as a … [Read more...] about Spectre rumoured to be longest James Bond movie yet
