Mekong ministers meet to discuss river planning (13-12-2006) HCM CITY— Senior government ministers representing the four member countries of the Mekong River Commission discussed issues on flood, drought and basin planning during the 13th meeting of the MRC Council which opened in HCM City yesterday. During the two-day meeting, the flood issues were being addressed by the MRC’s Flood Management and Mitigation Programme. MRC Council members from Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Viet Nam said that it was time the commission took a leading role in drought management on a regional scale, as this would involve issues of transboundary water management. MRC delegates discussed the launch of a new drought management programme to be implemented by the MRC next year. HA NOI — Viet Nam always considered co-operation with ASEAN a strategic priority and an important point in the country’s foreign policy, deputy minister of Foreign Affairs Dao Viet Trung said at a press meeting to announce Viet Nam’s ASEAN Chairmanship Year yesterday. Trung said that the theme for the year of Viet Nam’s ASEAN chairmanship was “Toward the ASEAN Community: From vision to action”. Viet Nam would give priority to enhance the bloc’s solidarity; effectively implement the ASEAN charter and ASEAN Community roadmap; expand and deepen the relationship between ASEAN and partners; and promote ASEAN’s position in the regional and international arena.
