WASHINGTON – The federal government has been partially shut down for more than a month because of an impasse between Donald Trump and congressional Democrats over the president's demand for $5.7 billion to build a wall along the southern border. Democrats have remained adamant in their opposition to such a barrier. However, on Wednesday, House Democratic leaders were drafting a letter to Trump that would offer roughly $5 billion in border security if the president agrees to reopen the government. Their proposal would not include money for any “new structures” along the border. Meanwhile, the Senate is expected to vote twice Thursday on possible remedies. One bill would provide the money as part of a spending bill with immigration provisions to reopen the government. The other would simply reopen the government temporarily while negotiations continue. Both might fail, meaning the impasse could continue. How much fence does $5.7 billion buy? … [Read more...] about Key shutdown question: How much border wall does $5.7 billion buy?

It was late in the evening, and Emily Long hadn't felt her baby move for a few hours. She did all the tricks doctors and baby books suggest. She laid on her side, eating a chocolate cookie. She drank a glass of orange juice. She woke up her husband, Joel, in bed, and together they placed their hands on her belly, searching for signs of life. They found nothing. They were admitted to St. Thomas Midtown in Nashville a couple of hours later. Just after midnight, doctors confirmed the worst — there was no heartbeat. Emily and Joel Long lost their baby girl on June 5. Afterward, they faced the impossible task of saying goodbye. In such heartbreaking circumstances, parents may only get a few hours with their stillborn baby. Hardly enough time. But, for the Longs, the medical staff at St. Thomas Midtown suggested another way. The hospital owned a Cuddle Cot, a device that when laid underneath the surface of a crib could help cool a baby's body, preserving it for two or … [Read more...] about Cuddle Cot gives grieving parents precious extra days with their stillborn baby girl
Kelsey Huebsch started to cry that day in 2013. Her husband, Ben Huebsch, ushered their children, Charlotte, 5, and Eleanora, 2, out of the ultrasound room at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. He called for Kelsey’s mom to pick them up. The whole family had made the trip from Ankeny to the hospital because this was the day they were supposed to learn the baby’s gender. But the ultrasound technicians spotted fluid on the baby’s organs that wasn’t supposed to be there. They called for Kelsey’s doctor. Kelsey, who is a nurse, looked at the screens and knew something was terribly wrong. The doctor diagnosed the unborn child with Down syndrome with severe complications. The baby would not survive. Kelsey was 18 weeks pregnant. The child was a girl. They named her Lucy. At 22 weeks in late December 2013, Kelsey delivered a stillborn Lucy. “She was already an angel,” Ben said. That tragic day for the Huebsch family has meant a lot of warmth for … [Read more...] about How a stillborn Iowa baby and 2 fleece blankets brought warmth and kindness to hundreds

For the latest updates on Fiona, click or tap here. Update, Tuesday, Feb. 15: Today is National Hippo Day! So it seems like a good time to check in on Fiona, the Cincinnati Zoo baby hippo that's become a bit of a social media star here in town. The past couple of days have been a little tough. Fiona hasn't been taking the bottle well, which keepers think might be because of teething discomfort. That means that unlike last week, she's not gaining weight. Her caregivers are working to relieve her gum pain through the use of a topical numbing solution and frozen cloths. Although she still has more progress to make, Fiona has come a long way in her three weeks on Earth. She now weighs in at 41.2 pounds, and she has graduated to a larger pool for strength-building exercise. Compare that to where she started. On Jan. 24, she was born six weeks early and weighed only 29 pounds. That's really small: Recorded birth weights for her species range from 55-120 pounds. She … [Read more...] about Happy Hippo Day, Fiona
