REUTERS/Adrees Latif Former New England Patriots receiver Malcolm Mitchell has ended his short NFL career, he announced over the weekend. Speaking at an event at his alma mater, Georgia, Mitchell told attendees he was moving on to a “new chapter” of his life. The oft-injured Mitchell was waived by the Patriots before the 2018 season and spent the year out of the league. He was continuing to battle a knee issue after missing all but one preseason game in 2017. A fourth-round pick from Georgia in 2016, Mitchell carried injury concerns from college after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee early in the Bulldogs’ 2013 season. Through two years in the NFL, the 26-year-old played in 14 games (six starts), all in 2016, catching 32 passes for 401 yards and four … [Read more...] about Former Patriots WR Mitchell retires at 25

Ryan Fitzpatrick will become the Miami Dolphins’ caretaker quarterback. The well-traveled veteran from Harvard University agreed to terms Sunday on an $11 million, two-year contract as a replacement to Ryan Tannehill and a placeholder until the Dolphins can draft their franchise quarterback. Fitzpatrick joins two other quarterbacks on the Miami roster, Luke Falk and Jake Rudock. Neither has started in the NFL. Fitzpatrick, 36, has a 50-75-1 record as a starter for seven NFL teams. He started seven games for Tampa Bay last year and had a passer rating of 100.4, which ranked ninth in the league. The Dolphins traded Tannehill on Friday to the Titans in a deal that also involved draft picks. Tannehill became Miami’s starting quarterback as a rookie in 2012 and never took a snap in the postseason. After Miami went 7-9 last year, owner Stephen Ross fired coach Adam Gase, ordered a youth movement, and acknowledged it may take time to build a winner. Fitzpatrick could become … [Read more...] about Dolphins find QB in 36-year-old Ryan Fitzpatrick
This has been an especially disappointing season for the New York Jets, which means there are going to be plenty of changes this offseason. The team will surely will be active in free agency -- they're expected to have about $100 million in cap space. And they'll build through the NFL Draft, where it's looking like the Jets will have a top-five pick. But the Jets also have several key decisions to make on their own pending free agents. He could be still be a viable backup for well less than the $10 million he’s making next year, but he hasn’t looked good in his three games filling in for Darnold. The Jets could choose to go a younger route or he could retire. Either way, McCown’s time with the Jets is likely over. Bryan Stork was the best center in the country in 2014. It was then, with him snapping footballs to Jameis Winston, Florida State won the national championship. Thirteen months later, he was a rookie with the New England Patriots, celebrating a Super Bowl win. He was only the fifth player to win the college football national championship and Super Bowl in back-to-back seasons, and it seemed obvious that Stork was well on his way to a long, and lucrative, NFL career. That was 2 ½ years ago. Stork has trimmed down from the 310 pounds he carried in 2015, his final professional season. The reddish facial hair he grew during his time in Tallahassee that helped him to look like he belonged among the Patriots’ offensive lineman is mostly gone. And, instead of preparing for another NFL season, the 26-year-old Stork is in Hattiesburg, where he’s a graduate assistant coach helping the Southern Miss football team. His career is another one cut short by head injuries … [Read more...] about Bryan Stork won a BCS title, Super Bowl before he was 25. So why is he coaching 2 years later?
In 2018, the eyes of the nation were again fixed on President Donald Trump, whose second year in office was no less remarkable than his first. It was a year that saw the president open up trade wars, meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, spar with the press and defend hush money payments to women he allegedly had affairs with, all while new revelations and indictments poured out of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian election meddling. Policies and politics divided us. We found ourselves embroiled in a fierce immigration debate. Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh ascended to the high court despite sexual assault allegations from Christine Blasey Ford. Nature humbled us. California burned as the Camp Fire became the most destructive in state history. Hurricane winds and floods battered the Carolinas. But other stories made us proud. Team USA brought home 23 Olympic medals from Pyeongchang, South Korea. Teachers fought for … [Read more...] about 2018 year in review: 50 stories from 50 states that moved us
