With the biggest television events of 2021 behind us — by which we mean the “Succession” return and definitely not the “Friends” reunion — it’s time to look ahead to the most exciting releases on Netflix , HBO Max , Hulu and more streaming services.

From star-powered murder mysteries to the long-awaited returns of fantasy franchises like “Game of Thrones” and “Lord of the Rings,” 2022 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for television. Marvel fans can also expect several new small screen additions to their cinematic universe, readers of contemporary fiction will be delighted to hear about the adaptation of Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s breakout novel and Gen X parents won’t have to wait much longer for the next chapter of the “Willow” saga with their Gen Z children. And those who love a good grift will relish in the television adaptation of one of New York Magazine’s most compelling exposés.

Granted, several of these shows haven’t yet confirmed exact release dates, but rest assured that HBO Max wouldn’t dare postpone “House of the Dragon” until 2023.

Here’s 11 shows we can’t wait to watch.

“The Afterparty”

Apple TV Plus, Jan. 28

Part of Apple’s plan to invest remarkable amounts of money into its TV programming, “The Afterparty” is its most star-studded affair since “The Morning Show.” The series revolves around a murder mystery that takes place at a high school reunion, with each episode showing the perspective of a different big-name actor, including Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, Zoë Chao, Ben Schwartz, Ike Barinholtz, Ilana Glazer, Jamie Demetriou and Dave Franco.

“Pam & Tommy”

Hulu, Feb. 2

From the director of “I, Tonya” comes a dramatic recreation of one of the most explosive celebrity sex tapes in history. Starring Lily James (“Downton Abbey,” “Mama Mia! Here We Go Again”) as Pamela Anderson and Sebastian Stan (“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) as Tommy Lee, plus marquee talent like Nick Offerman and Seth Rogen, look for this to be one of the biggest shows of the year.

“Reacher”

Amazon Prime Video, Feb. 4

The “Jack Reacher” industrial complex expands even further into a new Amazon show. Based on the first of Lee Child’s many best-selling novels, Alan Ritchson (“Titans,” “Smallville”) will take over the titular spy role from Tom Cruise.

“Inventing Anna”

Netflix, Feb. 11

Inspired by a New York Magazine article by Jessica Pressler, Netflix’s next grifter drama tells the true story of a New York City “heiress” who faked her way into the upper echelons of socialite society by fraudulently applying for loans and dodging debts before being sentenced to four to 12 years in prison for eight charges including grand larceny and theft of services. Shonda Rhimes produces and Julia Garner plays the titular role.

“Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber”

Showtime, Feb. 27

From the "Billions" co-creators, this is the first entry in an anthology series about companies that had a profound cultural impact. It will explore the saga of Uber’s rise and the tumultuous fall of CEO Travis Kalanick, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”

HBO Max, March 2022

The 1980s Los Angeles Lakers were one of the most dominant and dynamic teams in basketball history, led by larger-than-life figures like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson and Pat Riley. The new drama series from Adam McKay of “Succession” fame follows the on- and off-court antics of the players, with a cast that includes John C. Reilly, Jason Clarke, Adrien Brody, Quincy Isaiah, Sally Field and Jason Segel.

“The Lord of the Rings”

Amazon Prime Video, Sept. 2

Nearly 20 years after the success of the original trilogy of “Lord of the Rings” films, the revered saga from author J.R.R. Tolkien comes to television. It’s already been mapped out for five seasons with a reported price tag of $1 billion, so expect the highest production value of any series since “Game of Thrones” (or, perhaps “House of the Dragon”). It will take place in the Second Age of Middle Earth, which hardcore fans know is thousands of years before the storyline of Frodo’s quest to destroy the One Ring. Peter Jackson, the director of the film franchise, is not involved in the television adaptation. The ensemble cast includes Morfydd Clark ("His Dark Materials") as Galadriel, Robert Aramayo ("Game of Thrones") as Beldor and many more playing roles that have yet to be revealed, including more "Game of Thrones" alums like Joseph Mawle, who played Benjen Stark.

“Fleishman Is in Trouble”

FX on Hulu, 2022

Based on the critically acclaimed novel from New York Times feature writer Taffy Brodesser-Akner, Hulu continues on its literary hot streak following up “Normal People” with “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” which tells the story of a recent 40-something divorcé played by Jesse Eisenberg as he dives into the world of dating, while juggling raising his children and trying to track down the whereabouts of his ex-wife (Lizzy Caplan).

“House of the Dragon”

HBO Max, 2022

It was only a matter of time until the first of what will undoubtedly be many “Game of Thrones” spin-offs. This one follows the House Targaryen and takes place 200 years before the events of the original series, with King Viserys Targaryen played by Paddy Considine (“The Third Day,” “The Outsider”), as well as a supporting cast of Olivia Cooke (“Ready Player One”), Emma D’Arcy (“Truth Seekers”) and Matt Smith (“The Crown,” “Dr. Who”).

“Willow”

Disney Plus, 2022

There’s a lot to love about the cult 1980s fantasy film “Willow,” especially Val Kilmer’s campy role as swordfighter Madmartigan and Warwick Davis’ breakout performance as an unlikely wizard. The sequel will see Davis returning to his role as Willow Ufgood, with a supporting cast of young upstarts who, according to a recent social media post, don’t seem old enough to remember the original.

“She-Hulk”

Disney Plus, 2022

You wouldn’t like Tatiana Maslany (“Perry Mason,” “Orphan Black”) when she’s angry, especially when in her upcoming role as the lesser-known female version of Marvel’s iconic Hulk character, which is just one of a slate of new superhero shows premiering next year on Disney Plus. Other titles include “Moon Knight,” “Ms. Marvel” and “Secret Invasion.”
