The January transfer window is in full swing now – and, as expected, there are plenty of rumours.

John Stones’ future at Manchester City is in doubt with the Premier League champions yet to start talks with the £48million defender about a new contract.

Stones, 25, expected to be offered fresh terms by City this season, with two years left on his current deal.

But negotiations have still not started – and Stones’ failure to nail down a regular place in Pep Guardiola’s team this season has put a question-mark over his Etihad future.

Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes is once again the centre of attention as Manchester United look to give their squad a shot in the arm in an effort to rescue a season slowly going from bad to worse.

Another Fernandes, Gedson, is wanted by a host of Premier League clubs including Chelsea, Tottenham and West Ham and he looks to be another one on the move.

Fabinho wants to ‘welcome Mbappe at Liverpool’

Fabinho has re-opened rumours linking Kylian Mbappe with a move to Liverpool after admitting he would love to link up with his former teammate again.

The duo played together at Monaco, and were instrumental in helping the French side to the Champions League semi-finals in the 2016-2017 season.

And speaking to French outlet Telefoot Fabinho said he believes Mbappe will one day win the Ballon d’Or, before suggesting he could join the Reds one day.

“Mbappe will have a Ballon d’Or before Neymar,” Fabinho said. “I would like to welcome him at Liverpool.”

Arteta plays down transfer hopes

Mikel Arteta delivered a conclusive transfer message to Arsenal fans – suggesting no new signings will be completed this month.

The Spaniard is keen to strengthen his Gunners side this January, but has already been warned that he will not be handed huge funds for new recruits.

“At the moment there is nothing coming up,” Arteta told talkSPORT, when asked if Arsenal are expecting to welcome new recruits this month.

“The club is working on a few things but you know how difficult this window is and I’m not expecting many things.”

Man Utd still keen on Jimenez

Manchester United have not given up hope of signing Wolves striker Raul Jimenez.

The Mexican forward has impressed for the midlands club this season, scoring eight goals in the Premier League, and according to Sky Sports Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees him as a perfect prospect to lead the line for United.

They accept, however, that a deal will be hard to complete in January, and may wait until the summer before making a bid.

Xavi ‘turns down’ Barcelona- for now

Barcelona hero Xavi has reportedly turned down the opportunity to take charge of the Catalan club immediately – but he could yet do so at the end of the season.

The 39-year-old, who made 767 appearances in 17 seasons at Barca, is currently in charge of Qatari side Al Sadd- his first job in management.

Recent reports suggested he had met Barcelona’s general director Oscar Grau and his former teammate and now technical secretary Eric Abidal, and it was rumoured he would be taking over imminently.

According to Goal , however, Xavi has refused to do so until the end of the season due to his respect for Valverde.

Etheridge Cardiff future uncertain amid West Ham interest

Neil Harris cast uncertainty over Neil Etheridge’s Cardiff future by dropping him for the derby draw with Swansea before suggesting one of his goalkeepers will be leaving the club in January.

Etheridge has played over 100 games for Cardiff since joining the club in 2017.

But the Philippines international – who has been linked with West Ham as potential cover for the injured Lukasz Fabianski – was omitted for Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Swansea as Alex Smithies took over in goal.

“I won’t go into too much detail at the moment,” Cardiff manager Harris said. “There’s been a lot of talk around Neil, not just in this window but in the previous window as well.

“I had a really good couple of conversations with Neil in the week about his standards and what he wants to get back to. I think it’s been a little bit up and down.

“We’ve got three goalkeepers who all deserve to play first-team football and three don’t go into one, so something will have to give before February 1.”

Norwich have signed Ondrej Duda on loan from Hertha Berlin.

The midfielder will spend the rest of the season with the Canaries as they battle for Premier LEague survival.

Man Utd to offer £65m for Fernandes

Manchester United are set to lodge a £65million bid for Sporting Lisbon star Bruno Fernandes this week.

United see free-scoring midfielder Fernandes as the ideal player to bolster their ailing midfield, with Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay both out injured.

Sporting are said to have rebuffed United’s initial offer of a player-plus-cash deal, with Marcos Rojo, Joel Pereira or Angel Gomes going the other way.

That means United are likely to have to meet Sporting’s £50m valuation of Fernandes – rising to £65m with add-ons – if they are to sign him this month.

Chelsea agree deal for starlet Fiabema

Chelsea are on the brink of announcing the singing of Norwegian starlet Bryan Fiabema.

The Blues have moved to bolster their ranks after having their transfer ban reduced, allowing them to register new players this month.

Norwegian outlet VG has claimed that the 16-year-old forward had a trial with the Premier League giants at the end of last year and impressed enough to earn a permanent move.

Fiabema, who will join the academy rather than the first-team squad, has signed a three-year deal and was invited to watch Saturday’s Premier League 3-0 victory over Burnley in a box at Stamford Bridge.

It is understood he was then invited down to the dressing room to meet the squad and also got to meet manager Frank Lampard.

Van de Beek shuts down January move rumours

Donny van de Beek has confirmed that he will be staying at Ajax for the rest of the season, ruling out a January transfer to either Manchester United or Real Madrid .

The Dutch international, 22, has been targeted by Old Trafford chiefs as they bid to strengthen the club’s midfield, with Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay sidelined.

But speaking on Saturday the player said: “It is not that I can or want to do something at the moment.

“I have said it before and I will say it again: I will remain at Ajax this season. And maybe next season as well.

“These reports about Real Madrid or Manchester United are a good sign, but it is not important now. I’ve said I will stay at Ajax and I will do so, 100 percent.”

Inter Milan are trying to put Matias Vecino into a player-plus-cash deal for Christian Eriksen.

The Serie A giants are pushing to do a £20million deal for Tottenham contract rebel Eriksen who is a free agent in the summer.

They want to get the deal done in January and want midfielder Vecino included in the package with Spurs keen to sell in January – rather than lose him for nothing in the summer.

But player-plus-cash deals are notoriously difficult to get done because of differences in valuations while it is also understood that Eriksen’s mindset has been to wait until the summer.

Arsenal to send Mavropanos out on loan

Arsenal are on the brink of sending Konstantinos Mavropanos out on loan to German side Nurnberg.

The out-of-favour defender is expected to leave this month after struggling to cement a spot in the Gunners first team.

Arteta is looking to bolster his defensive ranks after Calum Chambers suffered a long-term injury which has ruled him out for up to nine months.

But the new Gunners manager has seemingly decided that Mavropanos doesn’t feature in his plans this season and will send him out on loan.

The 22-year-old, who has made just nine appearances in three years since arriving from Greek side PAS Giannina, is believed to be attracting interest from Italy.

Man Utd transfer target set to join Real Madrid instead

Manchester United target Donny van de Beek looks bound for Real Madrid – just months after the Reds backed out of signing the Ajax midfielder for just £20million.

Sunday Mirror Sport has learned that Van de Beek’s arrival at the Bernabeu in the summer is ‘more than 80 percent certain”, despite a desperate bid from Old Trafford chiefs to snatch the Dutch star from under the noses of the Spanish giants this month.

Madrid have agreed to meet Ajax’s £46.8m valuation. Yet, amazingly, United could have landed the 22-year-old for less than half the price before the start of the season.

Van de Beek’s agent Guido Albers held talks with United officials about securing a move to the Premier League.

But the deal went cold when United decided against cashing in on Madrid and Juventus target Paul Pogba.

Leeds eye January signings

Marcelo Bielsa is still keen to bring in a striker during this transfer window.

“The lack of having him on the bench is not something which cost us the game, but need to fill that place in the transfer window.”

Babel rejects Premier League interest

Holland forward Ryan Babel has signed for a third spell at Ajax. The 33-year-old, a product of the Eredivisie club’s academy who made his senior debut back in 2004, has joined on loan from Turkish side Galatasaray for the remainder of the season.

A statement on the club’s website announced: “Ajax has reached an agreement with Ryan Babel and Galatasaray SK. “The attacker is immediately loaned from the Turkish club, where he is currently under contract.

In a career also taking in Liverpool, Hoffenheim and Fulham among other clubs, Babel has won 63 caps for his country, scoring 11 goals. He was an unused member of the squad that finished as runners-up in the 2010 World Cup.

Haaland hits out at United

Erling Haaland has claimed Manchester United got their tactics all wrong in their bid to lure him to Old Trafford.

And the 19-year-old Norwegian hotshot has revealed Borussia Dortmund blew United out of the race for his signature by going all out to convince him to play in the Bundesliga – and claiming his talents were just what they needed.

Haaland has outlined how the Bundesliga side made him feel more wanted and valued than United and the other clubs he spoke to as he weighed up his options before leaving Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg last week.

The Norwegian star has scored 28 goals in 22 games this season and United desperately wanted him to boost their flagging season as they rebuild for the future.

But Haaland was far more impressed with Dortmund’s strategy to woo him – and he has told close friends he was stirred by the upbeat vibe at the German club compared to United.

John Stones’s Man City future in doubt

John Stones’ future at Manchester City is in doubt with the Premier League champions yet to start talks with the £48million defender about a new contract.

Stones, 25, expected to be offered fresh terms by City this season, with two years left on his current deal.

But negotiations have still not started – and Stones’ failure to nail down a regular place in Pep Guardiola’s team this season has put a question-mark over his Etihad future.

City lost Vincent Kompany last summer and have been without cruciate ligament victim Aymeric Laporte for most of the season.

With Stones continuing to struggle for form an fitness, Guardiola has used midfield lynchpins Fernandinho and Rodri as a centre-backs and has also called on veteran Nicolas Otamendi and teenagers Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Eric Garcia.

The City boss has said he now views Fernandinho as a long-term option to fill the position.

The Blues will move into the market for a new centre-back in the summer – and that will put more pressure on Stones even though Otamendi is expected to depart the club.

The England international has made just 10 starts this season and now faces a fight to keep his place in Gareth Southgate’s team for next summer’s Euros.

PSG looking to make Icardi deal permanent

Paris Saint-Germain are expecting to sign forward Mauro Icardi on a permanent deal in the summer, according to French outlet Foot Mercato.

Arkadiusz Milik, Kalidou Koulibaly and Fabian Ruiz are the three reported targets as United look to rectify a poor start to the season with a push for the top four.

Koulibaly is one of Europe’s most sought-after centre-backs, while Milik has scored 10 goals in 12 appearances this season. The Pole would provide United with much-needed depth in their forward line.

And Fabian Ruiz is understood to be a midfield target alongside Sporting’s Bruno Fernandes, who the Red Devils are heavily linked with.

Soslkjaer insists he is firm with Woodward over transfers

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted that he stands his ground when dealing with the club’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

Ahead of United’s clash with Norwich City, Solskjaer was asked to respond to rumours that he is not strong enough in calling for investment in the squad.

The Norwegian responded: “”Of course I am, of course we’ve got open discussions.

“I wouldn’t say to you what I say to him. We are building towards something, I’m almost getting bored myself talking about what we do have as a vision and a plan. But it doesn’t change from August until now.”

Palace offer Benteke to Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur are still reeling from the news that Harry Kane is likely to be out until April with a hamstring injury, leaving them with no fit striker.

But the Telegraph reports that Crystal Palace have offered out-of-favour forward Christian Benteke.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is understood to be desperate to sign a stand-in striker and the 29-year-old is surplus to requirements at Selhurst Park after the Eagles signed Cenk Tosun on loan from Everton.

Benteke has not scored all season, but his recruitment would mean natural wide player Son Heung-min would not have to play up front in Kane’s absence.

Moyes wants Stubbs at West Ham

David Moyes wants Alan Stubbs to join him at West Ham.

The ex-Everton and Celtic defender, who played and coached under Moyes at Goodison Park, has been offered a position on the Scot’s back-room team at the London Stadium.

That approach follows Moyes’ failure to appoint Stuart Pearce as his defensive coach for a second time.

Pearce was keen to take up the role, which he held during Moyes’ first spell as Hammers boss, but the board blocked the move over commends he made about the club in the media.

Stubbs, 48, back on Merseyside after his time as St Mirren boss ended after just three months, will give an answer to the Irons in the next few days.

Moyes hopeful to fast-track Randolph return

West Ham boss David Moyes is hopeful he can fast-track the £4million return of former Hammers keeper Darren Randolph.

Moyes’ first-choice shot-stopper Lukasz Fabianski limped off early on in Friday night’s 1-0 away loss to Sheffield United.

And replacement David Martin did himself no favours as his blunder led to the Blades’ winner. Randolph was set to move to the London Stadium earlier this week, but the switch from Middlesbrough was delayed due to issues arising during the 32-year-old’s medical.

Moyes said: “We were just waiting on a small injury improving – so hopefully that will be soon.”

Chelsea target Napoli forward Mertens

Chelsea are chasing the signature of Napoli forward Dries Mertens, according to Le10Sport.

Lyon’s Moussa Dembele is also linked with Chelsea as Lampard looks to ensure Chelsea finish in the top four this season.

Fernandes appears to send message to Man Utd

Bruno Fernandes appeared to make reference to the transfer speculation surrounding him when he scored for Sporting Lisbon on Saturday.

The Portugal international is Manchester United’s top target this January, and he’s been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford this month.

But Fernandes was picked to start for Sporting this weekend, and got on the scoresheet against Premiera Liga rivals setubal.

The midfielder netted from the penalty spot, fooling the keeper with a bizarre skip with his run-up before firing home.

Fernandes wheeled away in delight at scoring and celebrated with his team-mates.

But before doing so he appeared to make reference to the transfer speculation by putting his hands over his ears. He then blew a kiss.

Jurgen Klopp ‘open’ to Ousmane Dembele move

Jurgen Klopp is reportedly open to idea of signing Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele.

Liverpool have been linked with a move for the France international for some time, but have never made an official bid for the forward.

The Reds have already signed Takumi Minamino this January, spending just £7.25million on the highly-rated Japanese international.

But reports in Spain suggest the German hasn’t wrapped up his business for the month, and is considering a big-money move for £85million-rated Dembele.

According to ElDesmarque, the Liverpool manager is ‘keen’ on a transfer for the Frenchman, who has made just nine appearances for Barcelona in all competitions this season.
